At the head of the procession are two girls without equipment preceded by two men conversing; they are the Eponymous heroes, founders of two of the ten Attic tribes. Limestone statuette of a childbirth scene ca. 310-30 B.C. Cypriot The subject of this statuette is childbirth. Here, as on the relief fragment (24.97.92) displayed nearby in this case, mother and infant are both shown, suggesting the function of this object was a votive offering of thanks. The sense of exhaustion vividly conveyed by the mother's reclining pose makes an interesting contrast to the more restrained characterization of childbirth depicted on the relief.. Date: ca. 1427-1352 B.C..Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces on which to write or draw. The term is used, by extension, to refer to chips of limestone, which were employed for similar purposes. Despite their humble appearances, ostraca bear a wide range of images and texts, including administrative documents, literary texts, and depictions of royal and divine figures. The texts were mostly written with reed pen and ink of two colors, red and black, and inscribed in Hieratic, the cursive script of ancient Egypt throughout most of its periods. Made originally for the Chartreuse de la Sainte-Trinité de Champmol, the Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Dijon, the tomb has been reconstructed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon where it is exhibited today. Openwork furniture plaque with lion. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 3.03 x 2.44 x 0.43 in. (7.7 x 6.2 x 1.09 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a snarling lion with hindquarters raised, head turned back over his shoulder, framed on three sides with a simple border decorated by two parallel vertical lines. The lion is carved in the openwork technique, in which the background is cut away and remaining elements are carved in the round. The eye was drilled for the insertion of an inlay, now missing. The piece is heavily damaged and parts of the frame and the lion's lower legs have been restored in wax. A tenon projects from the top edge of the frame and would have been inserted into a slot in a separate frame, probably as part of a piece of furniture. Two drill holes in the tenon indicate t

Date: 18th century.This impressive jade sculpture represents a Daoist paradise where immortals, cranes, and deer move through a mountainous landscape punctuated by pines, a waterfall, and a pavilion that stands beside a peach tree laden with fruit. Lower down the slope, a servant offers a platter of these "peaches of immortality" to two bearded figures. The otherworldly atmosphere is further enhanced by the meandering clouds that encircle the crest of the mountain. Jade, which is sonorous when struck but is harder than steel, has long been associated with moral virtue and immortality. The theme of reclusion within misty, fantastic realms appears in youxian (Wandering in Transcendence) poetry of the Six Dynasties period (220-589), and was a very popular painting subject beginning in the Tang dynasty (618-906).
