Photo album offered to Jacobus Marinus Pijnacker Hordijk at his departure from Jogyakarta in 1886 by his friends and acquaintances. The album contains 50 cardboard sheets with a total of 89 photos. Two photos each have been stuck to 32 sheets; Cartes-de-visites are inserted on 5 sheets and 12 sheets are empty. In the front a drawn title page. The album band coated with brown linen and decorated on the front with metal ornaments (the rosette at the bottom left is missing), with metal book lock.

Genealogy of the Lords and Counts of Culemborg. To chronicle his noble ancestry, the first count of Culemborg, Floris I of Pallandt, commissioned an illumi-nated genealogy of his family. Depicted in it are 55 lords and ladies of noble birth. The genealogical series of drawings spans around 800 years and 26 generations.

Fragment with running animal roundels and kufic inscriptions, 1530-1950 (radiocarbon date, 95% probability). Iran, in the style of the Buyid period (945-1055). Silk: lampas weave, brocaded; overall: 35.3 x 25 cm (13 7/8 x 9 13/16 in.). This fragment preserves a wide central band flanked by narrower inscription bands. The narrower bands contain, on a dark blue background a continuous inscription in elaborate Kufic, the ivory-colored lettering oriented at right angles to the warp. On the wider ivory panel there appear ovals enclosing a frieze of running animals within which are hexagons enclosing stars. The ovals alternate vertically with cartouches containing an inscription in simple Kufic, the design appearing in blue, pink, and ivory.

Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425): fol. 306v, Text, c. 1405. Master of the Brussels Initials and Associates (French). Ink, tempera, and gold on vellum; codex: 20.3 x 15.7 x 7 cm (8 x 6 3/16 x 2 3/4 in.). This precious volume was obviously highly prized by its owner, the French-born King of Navarre, who had his coat of arms painted on no less than twenty folios. Rather than directly commissioning this manuscript from a specific workshop, it seems that Charles the Noble acquired his book of hours -- perhaps ready-made for the luxury market -- while on a trip to Paris in 1404-05. A collaborative effort, six painting styles are evidenced within the pages of this codex, those of two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The album contains six presteseries about architecture, columnords and Roman ruins. Parkamers band with bookplates a weapon stamped in gold. The weapon, an eagle with spread wings for a tree, is probably a member of the De Méan family in Liège. In front of three blank sheets and in the back of four blank sheets.

Textile 10th-11th century This dyed linen fragment is hand-blocked with a repeating inscription in kufic, Sovereignty is Allah’s” in black outline and gilded. Above the inscription is a simple horizontal border of alternating circles and ovals within straight lines. The print is ornamented further through the stylization of the vertical shafts of the letters and the purposeful mirror images that are created within the inscription, giving the design a rhythmic cadence. The uneven printing of the inscription and the quotidian nature of the phrase suggest the textile may have been mass produced.. Textile 448602

Mantiq al-Tayr (Language of the Birds) Author Farid al-Din `Attar Iranian Calligrapher Sultan 'Ali al-Mashhadi Iranian ca. 1600 This lavishly illuminated double-page frontispiece contains the first twenty lines of prayers. The text areas are enclosed by four large panels that contain the title of the book, Mantiq al-Tayr, and the author's name, Farid al-Din 'Attar, in the middle cartouche. A minute inscription at the edge of these panels says that it was made by a famous illuminator and painter, Zayn al-'Abidin, in Isfahan by the order of Shah 'Abbas. There are another four vertical panels filled with serrated leaves next to the text area. These panels are surrounded by a meticulously arranged lobed band that shows a harmonious combination of gold, blue, light green, orange, pink, and white.

Architectura von den Funf Seuvlen (...). Column book, consisting of a cover, two blades, 4 sheets of text, title page and 28 sheets etched illustrations. The book was taken apart and set up, the sheets with text and illustrations have their own item number. The cover and bracts are included in the main record. The first edition of the book appeared in 1600. This is a publication of Johann Bussemacher 1611, whereby the original images have been copied understanding and renumbered at the bottom left, 1-28. Structure of the book: The Tuscan, Doric, Ionian, Corinthian and Composite Orders are discussed successively. After 1 or 2 sheets with illustrations in the construction of the order, blades follow with possible applications in portals, etc.

Date: ca. 1300.As the second volume of a seven-part Qur'an manuscript, this codex contains no colophon, but it opens with an elaborately illuminated double page bearing intricate geometric strapwork closely comparable to designs of Andalusian and North African tiles. The patron who commissioned this manuscript of the Quran spared no expense—from the first few folios, replete with lush illumination, to the binding, elaborately engraved with the Chinese-inspired lotus blossoms and cloud bands common to the art of the Timurid dynasty in Iran and Central Asia. The second and third pages displayed here feature intricate vegetal ornamentation in gold on a background of cobalt blue, both materials prized for their value and beauty. The right-hand page contains the Arabic text of the Qurans first sura, or chapter, which plays a part in many Muslims daily lives; the following chapter begins on the left. Its diverse contents include texts describing the stations of the sun and moon, the musical modes, the Muslim calendar, the times of prayer in different seasons, the Christian calendar, and the times of sunrise and sunset--all arranged according to the position of Istanbul, where its owner is assumed to have lived. Fragment of a Coat early 14th century The repeated Arabic inscription in thuluth script is translated as "Glory to our master the Sultan alMalik alMu'ayyad." This probably refers to the Rasulid sultan al-Mu'ayyad Da'ud ibn Yusuf (r. 1297-1321), indicating that this is one of the many objects manufactured in Egypt for the Yemeni sultans, either as diplomatic gifts or special commissions. The top two-thirds of the sampler includes motifs easily classifiable into standard categories, such as alphabetic characters, geometric designs, and floral motifs, worked in silk and linen on a linen ground using several common stitch techniques. An embroidered alphabet marks the end of the top third of the piece. The middle third is worked with white thread on a white ground, a technique commonly known as whitework.
