Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Dominic and Angels. Artist: Giulio Cesare Procaccini (Italian, Bologna 1574-1625 Milan). Dimensions: 101 1/8 x 56 3/8 in. (256.9 x 143.2 cm).This altarpiece shows the Institution of the Rosary, established by Saint Dominic (1170-1221) in the thirteenth century. The devotion was particularly popular in seventeenth-century Italy. The painting was commissioned soon after 1612, by Gaspare Spanzotta for the Chapel of Saints Francis and Dominic in the church of the Madonna dei Miracoli at Corbetta, near Milan. The tight composition and brilliant brushwork are characteristic of Procaccini's style, which evolved under the influence of work by Ludovico Carracci and Parmigianino. The Adoration of the Magi ca. 1520 Gerard David First established in Bruges, Gerard David also joined the painters guild in Antwerp in 1515, where his compositions and motifs soon began to circulate. This excellently preserved panel is strongly indebted to Davids work. The extravagantly dressed onlookers, however, are a pure invention of Antwerp art, as is the landscape view with travelers carrying goods for trade. Due to Antwerps status as the mercantile center for northern Europe, scenes of the Adoration of the Magi were particularly popular in the city. They served not only a devotional use, but could also be associated with the travel of foreign goods.. The Adoration of the Magi. Date: early 1480s.This painting, which most likely was intended as a single, private devotional panel, combines the depiction of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds as described in both biblical and mystical literature. It probably dates from the early 1480s, before David established himself in Bruges. The homely and naive figure types and the geometric simplification of the heads of the Virgin and angels reflect models the artist knew from his early training in the northern Netherlands. Already present is the characteristic combination of serene landscape, simple architectural setting, and meditative figures that would contribute to the painter's popularity. The Presentation of Christ in the Temple Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian ca. 1435 As recounted in the gospel of Luke (2:22-40), forty days after giving birth, Mary took the baby Jesus to the temple, where the aged Anna and Simeon prophesied his destiny. Giovanni di Paolo based the design of this picture on a work by Gentile da Fabriano that he saw in Florence, but he translated the naturalism of Gentile's art into his own intensely expressive style. The scene belongs to a series that formed the base (predella) of an altarpiece dating to the mid-1430s. One of the main panels of that altarpiece also belongs to The Met (88.3.111).
