The Crucifixion. Artist: Francesco Granacci (Francesco di Andrea di Marco) (Italian, Villamagna 1469-1543 Florence). Dimensions: Central panel 19 x 11 1/2 in. (48.3 x 29.2 cm); each wing 19 x 6 in. (48.3 x 15.2 cm). Date: ca. 1510.Painted around 1500-1510, this exquisite triptych was intended for private devotion (an old inventory label on the back indicates that at one time it belonged to the Stiozzi Ridolfi family). When closed, it could be easily transported. When opened, it offered three scenes for meditation relating to death, resurrection, and the Last Judgment (note how one of the resurrected figures in the Last Judgment looks directly out at the viewer). Although the figure scale is not consistent, the northern-inspired landscape is continuous in all three panels. Date: 1445.Together with a scene of the Creation and Expulsion from Paradise, also in the Metropolitan (Robert Lehman Collection), this picture formed the base (predella) of an altarpiece formerly in the church of San Domenico, Siena (Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence). Painted in 1445, the two paintings rank among the finest works by the artist. Groups of saints and angels embrace in a rich, tapestry-like garden of Paradise. Giovanni di Paolo was much inspired by paintings he saw in Florence by Fra Angelico, but he rejected the perspectival rationalism of Florentine art in favor of a visionary effect of exquisite intensity. Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist ca. 1507-9 Andrea Solario Italian Trained in the Milan of Leonardo da Vinci, Solario traveled in 1507 to France, where he worked for Cardinal dAmboise. There he closely studied Netherlandish painting. In this remarkable picture Solario achieves a striking effect by contrasting Salomes idealized beauty and jewels with the horrific head of Saint John, held aloft by the cropped arm of the executioner. The biblical story of Salome seductively dancing for King Herod and demanding as her reward the head of John the Baptist has long fascinated artists, and in the twentieth century notably inspired Gustav Klimt, Oscar Wilde, and Richard Strauss..
