Date: 13th-16th century.Among the many Precolumbian gold pendants from the Isthmian region depicting a wide range of animals and composite beings are those that feature bat imagery. They form a sizable group and usually have human bodies with faces that have an upswept, leaflike nose. The nose leaf, here shown as a stylized, projecting loop, is part of the sensing apparatus of leaf-nosed bats which locate their food primarily by sound reflected off their prey, often as small as insects. In addition to the nose leaf, the most characteristic feature on human-bat figures, strongly protruding eyes depicted on stalks, is also associated with bat imagery. On this rare, carefully cast pendant, the bat-headed figure is adorned with ornamental leg bands, a necklace, and a crown of feathers, and is shown sitting with raised hands above what resembles an entrance to an architectural structure, as if guarding it. Date: ca. 1880.This object and the group to which it belongs (see also 2014.713.1-.10) reflect the keen interest in historical styles in nineteenth-century Europe. Artists and designers looked to various artistic periods for forms and motifs. There was also an interest in reproducing works of art from earlier epochs with historical accuracy--an approach that is particularly evident in the taste for so-called archaeological jewelry (jewelry based on excavated examples from antiquity), which reached its zenith in the middle of the century. The jewelry made during this period encompassed Etruscan, ancient Roman, early Christian, Byzantine, and medieval styles. The firm of Castellani in Rome both pioneered and dominated the production of archaeological jewelry. Dimensions: H. 1 1/8 in. (2.9 cm) W. 5/8 in. (1.6 cm). Date: 5th-8th century. This small cross would haven been strung on a necklace or string and worn around the neck. It is decorated with a pattern of incised circles. Similar patterns of concentric circles are found throughout early Byzantine art. These circles may have represented the reflective qualities of mirrors, which in the ancient and early Byzantine world were believed to deflect evil.Crosses were everywhere in the early Byzantine world. They marked religious, secular, and domestic buildings, public works, clothes and jewelry, and objects in the home. The cross was a sign of Christ's triumph over death and the hope of eternal life and was frequently ascribed apotropaic, or protective, powers by the faithful. Transported on poles shouldered by humans, the carriage was suspended from decorative bronze hooks. Rich in imagery, the top ring consists of stylized lotuses, symbolizing purity, surmounted by a bud. Beneath is a kirtimukha, a fierce-faced monster motif intended to ward off evil spirits, which is lifted by Garuda, a mythical bird often depicted carrying the Hindu god Vishnu through the sky. Underscoring Khmer ideas of divine kingship, Garuda is also a conqueror of serpents (nagas), which form the loops hanging from its tail. As seen in the waterpot (kendi) on the left, Hindu theology arrived from India, but the combination of such elements into a luxurious, utilitarian bronze is distinctly Khmer.Standard surmounted by a ram. The vases themselves are soldered to large rings, and hollow cylindrical bases at their bottom tips each have four additional hollow balls soldered to them. The openwork medallions are particularly refined and display the skill of Newar artists in working sheet copper. The lotus bloom and stem openwork panels are also exceptional for their quality of execution and point to an early date in the chronology of these crown types. They can be understood as directly descending stylistically from the earliest known example, dated by inscription to 1145.. Vajracarya Priest's Crown. Nepalese. ca. 13th century. Dimensions: H. 11 1/2 x W. 19 1/2 x D. 12 1/2 in. (29.2 x 49.5 x 31.8 cm). Date: ca. 1775.These wall lights are shaped with great naturalism to resemble lily stalks tied together with a large bow. They are not a proper pair, as their ribbons do not complement each other but flow in the same direction; therefore, they were most likely part of a larger set. The unknown chaser and gilder made clear contrasts between such highly burnished areas as the opened blooms and those given a matte finish, such as the buds. Lilies are strongly scented flowers that were very popular during the Neoclassical period, and a number of contemporary references to sconces in the shape of sprays of lilies are known. The successful bronze worker Pierre Gouthière, for instance, made a pair composed of three lily branches for Madame du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, for which he charged 2,500 livres. Dated 18th CenturyPanel with Horse Heads 11th century This panel, probably from a wooden door, is deeply carved with two symmetrical horse heads in relief. Attention to detail is evident in the beaded bands and bridles amid arabesques. The piece was carved to different depths in order to produce a pleasing chiaroscuro effect, a technique mastered by Fatimid woodworkers. A companion piece, almost certainly from the same door, is in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #6697.
