The caption for this map from The Travels of Marco Polo Vol I as translated by Henry Yule reads: Marco Polos Itineraries No II Kerman to Hormuz Bk I Ch 19. Polos possible route is marked by dotted line. Marco Polo was a Venetian traveler who left Venice, Italy, with his father Niccolo and uncle Maffeo in 1271. He arrived in China in 1275 where Kublai Khan had his court, and returned home in 1294. Note that the city of Kinsai, the so-called "Heavenly City," was called by Marco Polo Coromoran. Herman Moll (c. 1654 - September 22, 1732), was a cartographer, engraver, and publisher. Moll produced his earliest maps from studying cartographers such as John Senex and Emanuel Bowen. He probably sold his first maps from a stall in various places in London. From 1688 he had his own shop in Vanley's Court in London's Blackfriars. Between 1691 and 1710 his business was located at the corner of Spring Gardens and Charing Cross, and he finally moved along the River Thames to Beech Street where he remained until his death.

The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under direct British control as a crown colony on 1 April 1867. The colony was dissolved in 1946 as part of the British reorganisation of its South-East Asian dependencies following the end of the Second World War. The Straits Settlements consisted of the four individual settlements of Malacca, Dinding, Penang (also known as Prince of Wales Island), Singapore (with Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands). The island of Labuan, off the coast of Borneo, was also incorporated into the colony with effect from 1 January 1907, becoming a separate settlement within it in 1912. With the exception of Singapore, Christmas Island, and the Cocos Islands, these territories now form part of Malaysia.
