On the deck of a Coast Guard-manned assault transport off the Marshall Islands, Coast Guardsmen and Marines kneel in prayer before an improvised altar in tribute to comrades who fell in the conquest of Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls. They Were Among the First to Hit Leyte. From a Coast Guard-manned LST, these four Coast Guardsmen, tempered for battle by many Pacific beachheads, were among the first Naval personnel to set foot on Leyte Island in the Philippines on A-Day. They were members of a beach party that struck the shore with the third assault wave. In charge of a tank lighter off the Coast Guard-manned invasion transport on which he was serving, Coast Guardsman Beezer was instrumental in saving the lives of seven members of a nearby landing craft.

Coast Guard Photog Shoots New Greenland Warfare. Serving aboard a Coast Guard combat cutter on the Greenland Patrol, Coast Guard Combat Photographer John E. Young made a spectacular series of pictures of the recent smashing of Nazi radio-weather stations in ice-covered Greenland. In two months of intensive action, 60 Nazis were captured, one armed trawler taken, another sunk and two stations knocked out. Coast Guardsman Young, a photographer's mate first class, lives at 690 Grove Street, Newton Lower Falls, Mass. His wife is the former Miss Jean Kenjeska of that place. Young has served two years on a combat cutter in North Atlantic shipping lanes and 11 months on the Greenland Patrol.

AP Photographer Wrecks Cameras at Tarawa. Associated Press photographer Frank Filan and Coast Guard combat artist Ken P. Riley examine the former's cameras, ruined by water in the invasion of Tarawa. The AP man was heading into shore when the invasion barge sunk. He started to wade when he fell into a hole, wrecking his cameras. After spending two days in a foxhole on the bloody beach he met a Coast Guard photographer who loaned him a camera. Riley, attached to a Coast Guard manned transport that participated in the invasion, formerly lived in Parsons, Kansas.

(left), is keenly interested in modern innovations aboard the Coast Guard Icebreaker NORTHWIND, as compared with the way things were when he and the vessel's commanding officer, Captain Earl K. Rhodes (right) sailed together in the '30s aboard the old Cutter Northland early in Captain Rhodes' career. They are examining a recreation facility which adds pleasure and a "touch of home" to the 1950 Bering Sea Patrol. Recorded music is piped from the captain's cabin to the crew's quarters throughout the day. An ingenious gyroscopic cradle, suspended on a brass rod, keeps the record player in a vertical position no matter how rough the weather may be.

Baptism At Sea - Just Before Iwo Jima. Standing in salt water just inside the huge bow doors of a Coast Guard-manned LST under way in the Pacific, Coast Guardsman Lawrence R. Pawnee Coast Guardsman At Guadalcanal. First American Indian to participate in an offensive operation with United States naval forces in this war, Coast Guardsman Joseph Toahty of Pawnee, Okla., has seen almost two years service in the southwest Pacific. He is one of the Coast Guardsmen who landed the first wave of troops at Guadalcanal and contracted malaria there. Toathy, 23 years old and a motor machinist's mate second class, is the first Pawnee ever to go to sea. His Indian name is Le-tuts-sta-ka-ha.
