The Australian Ambassador to the United States, Sir Percy Spender, receiving one of the pictures from a U.S. Army general.President Eisenhower this week signed a Bill authorizing the Secretary of the Army to transfer 28 paintings, depicting Australian troops in action in World War II, to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Theses paintings were executed by German artists during World War II and became the property of the United States as trophies of war. They are valued at $4,200. Congress passed a special Act to enable the Department of the Army to make the gift, as U.S. military departments are without legislative authority to donate historical items to foreign museums.
