Coast Guardsmen Trained Chinese Allies to Handle War Dogs. Twenty Coast Guardsmen, all experts in handling dogs and horses, were flown over the hump to teach Chinese guerillas how to use war dogs for sentry duty and patrol work to secure their positions against infiltration by the enemy. The Coast Guard instructors found their Chinese students cooperative and eager to learn. Shown here is one of the First Classes to complete the training course. The Situation Definitely Isn't Well in Hand. There's desperation in the face of this Marine as he summons all his tact ad resourcefulness to persuade a little Jap youngster to "dry them tears." The husky fighting man plainly would prefer to tackle an enemy machinegun nest over meeting this crisis at Saipan. The picture, made by a Coast Guard combat photographer, shows an enclosure set up by the American invaders to safeguard Japanese women and children on the battle swept Marianas island.
