18 Coast Guardsmen Honored For Heroism at Saipan. Four Bronze Stars and 14 Fleet Commendation Ribbons are awarded to two Coast Guard officers and 16 enlisted men for heroic and meritorious action in opening "Hari Kari Pass" to reinforce a beleaguered beachhead at Charon-Kanoa during the most furious fighting in the Saipan invasion. Before a muster of the ship's company, the awards are presented by Captain Donald C. McNeil, skipper of the Coast Guard-manned invasion transport on which the heroes served, in behalf of Admiral Chester R. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, and Secretary of the Navy Forrestal. Two officers, two coxswains and the crews of two control boats were honored for their gallant action in leading reinforcements to the beach. Two pharmacist's mates received ribbons for "performing duties" far beyond that expected of men of their ratings.

Soldiers at Camp Lewis in American Lake, Washington, experienced a move in late fall of 1917. Due to changes in housing arrangements, the camp was in a state of hustle and bustle. Company streets and surrounding areas were filled with soldiers' belongings such as cots, bedding, blankets, ditty bags, and camp chairs. This was a new experience for many soldiers, but they embraced the order and transported their items to their new quarters.
