. 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry Private Cox was born in Manchester, England but emigrated to Canada before the First World War where he worked as a fruit farmer. When the First World War broke out, he was touring the United States on horseback, and on returning to Canada was initially denied entry to the country. He enlisted with 72 Battalion Seaforth Highlanders of Canada on 22 February 1915, subsequently transferring to 11 Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles. After travelling to England with 7 Battalion, Canadian Infantry in 1916, Pte Cox relinquished his rank of corporal and joined the Lewis Gun Section in order to see active service on the Western Front. He participated in the capture of Vimy Ridge but was subsequently wounded near Fabers on 13 April 1917. Gangrene set in and his legs were amputated above the knee. Private Cox died, aged 25, of post operative shock in the Canadian Hospital at Étaples on 20 April 1917. He is buried at Étaples Military Cemetery. Faces of the First W

General Manuel Goded Llopis (18821936), Spanish Army general who was one of the key figures in the July 1936 revolt against the democratically elected Second Spanish Republic. Having unsuccessfully led an attempted insurrection in Barcelona, he was captured and executed by the Republican government.

. Field Marshal Sir John French, Earl of Ypres, was born in 1852. After serving briefly with the Royal Navy, he joined the Army in 1874, serving in the Sudan and South Africa during the Anglo-Boer Wars. During 1912 - 1913, French served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff rising to the rank of Field Marshal in 1913. French was given command of the British Expeditionary Force on the outbreak of the First World War but his erratic performance led to his replacement by Haig in 1915. French was subsequently given command of the British Home Front for the remainder of the First World War, during which time he was required to quell the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. . 13th Royal Welsh Fusiliers Joseph Naphtali was born in 1881 in Manchester. Prior to the war he was a schoolmaster in Eccles. He was assigned to the 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a lance corporal in October 1914. He received his commission as second lieutenant in February 1915. He was admitted to a convalescent hospital in Blackpool in 1916, suffering from neurasthenia. He was released from army service in 1919. Neurasthenia is a psychiatric term that refers to a broad range of symptoms including chronic fatigue, malaise, anxiety and depression. Emotive and potentially contentious, it is a term also referred to as 'soldier's heart' and is associated with shell shock. Lieutenant Robert Davies(1900-1975), who received the George Cross for commanding the bomb disposal unit which saved St. Paul's Cathedral during the Blitz. The 8ft bomb took three days to be removed from the mud where it had fallen on September 15th 1940, only 26ft away from the cathedral wall. Davies drove the lorry bearing the bomb at high speed across cleared roads to Hackney Marshes, where it was safely disposed of. Date: September 15th 1940

This illustration appeared in the London-based Penrose Pictorial Annual of 1900. The publication was a London-based review of the graphic arts that ran from 1895 to 1982. This image shows General Sir George White (18351912). He is best known as the commander of Ladysmith (in Zulu land in South Africa) during the Second Boer War during the South African War (1899-1902). He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroism in the Second Afghan War. In 1900 he became commander in chief of Gibraltar. He was a son of a Gordon Highlander.

. 20 Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Infantry Pte Thornton was educated at Wellington School and Clare College, Cambridge in England. At the outbreak of war in 1914, he was working in Canada and enlisted there as a private in preference to training for a commission. A good linguist, Pte Thornton served as a listener on the Western Front, monitoring enemy activity and gathering intelligence. This was a particularly dangerous deployment as listening posts were usually sited some 30 yards ahead of the front line. Pte Thornton was wounded twice on 17 November 1915. Efforts to treat his injuries, including the amputation of a leg, were unsuccessful and he died on 21 November. Pte Thornton is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord).
