The action of the hand crank meshing with the sprocket moves the platform, by meshing on a larger toothed wheel, allowing it to go up or down the vertical toothed rod. Therefore, this device not only facilitates moving a heavy object from bottom to top, it also saves a great amount of energy, as it transforms the circular motion into rectilinear motion. based on a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Italian artist and polymath. Such grand, distinct helmets are thought to have functioned as personal identifiers for elite soldiers on chaotic battlefields thick with smoke and thousands of combatants, allowing commanders to tell friend from foe. They were also means to express ones taste and stature, worn in the context of processions and state receptions. Samurai often favored powerful and symbolic designs inspired by the natural world. The bowl of this helmet is made of iron, and its dramatic peak, shaped as a cresting wave, is formed from leather.. Helmet (Kawari-Kabuto) in the Shape of a Wave. The glass-topped box has a paper label reading: "Zur Erinnerung an die 3 Schachparthien zwischen Aachen & Leipzig vom 16/11 84 - 9/8 85" In memory of three chess matches between Aachen and Leipzig from November 16, 1884, to August 9, 1885. The winner of the matches was Leipzig. Germany produced a number of these elegantly made chess sets, usually of wood, but occasionally of ivory. Even more fragile chessmen were made in Denmark. A set in the Danish Museum of Industrial Art has "crow's nests" of lacy forms and twisting stems of triple "threads." A peculiarity with the knight is the development of two addorsed horse heads, a form that goes back to the early seventeenth century. In some sets there is nothing to indicate that the piece is associated with a horse, and it is distinguished by an incomplete ruff, or a cut aslant. This design occurs as early asCittern.
