Bhima's Consultation with the Astrologer: Scene from the Nala-Damayanti Drawings, c. 1790-1800. Northern India, Himachal Pradesh, Pahari Kingdom of Kangra. Ink with slight color on paper; overall: 22.2 x 33.5 cm (8 3/4 x 13 3/16 in.). In the central pavilion, King Bhima, father of the beautiful Damayanti, receives favorable signs from his astrologers for the marriage of his daughter to her beloved, Nala. In the upper left corner, King Bhima tells the good news to his daughter, while messengers inform Nala in the upper right. Musicians and dancers already begin to celebrate.This lyrical series depicts scenes from the extended romantic poem of the 1100s, based on an episode from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata.

Second section of the Hungry Ghosts Scroll located at the Kyoto National Museum. This scroll depicts the world of the hungry ghosts, one of the six realms of Buddhism and contains tales of salvation of the hungry ghosts. This particular section explains how those who have been born as hungry ghosts are saved by the offerings of the living. The central scene of this section shows people pouring water on a funerary marker for the ullambana festival for the dead. The whole scroll has been designated a National Treasure of Japan in the category paintings. It was possibly part of a set of scrolls depicting the six realms which was kept at Sanjusangen-do.

This early 1900s illustration shows Aladdin and the magic lamp. The tale is a folktale and probably originated in the Middle East. His tale is often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights, or the Arabian Nights. It is not one of the original tales but one included by the Frenchman Antoine Galland. Aladdin is a poor man in China who is recruited by a sorcerer named Mustapha. Mustapha wants Aladdin to retrieve a magic oil lamp from a cave, as seen here.

After much debate the king agrees, and the brothers are seen with Vishvamitra departing through a gateway (lower right) and in a distant pavilion. This event sets the stage for Ramas and Lakshmanas interactions with ascetics in the forest and anticipates their many battles with demons throughout the Ramayana. These four miniature paintings depicting the Evangelists were originally part of a book of hours, a type of small prayer book that was designed for wealthy laypeople to use for their personal daily devotions. Here, each Evangelist appears in a detailed, naturalistic setting accompanied by his traditional winged symbol. Date: first quarter 17th century.The primitive fur, the alms bowl, the flute, and the trance-like meditative state identify this figure as a dervish, or a sufi, a Muslim mystic who has renounced the material aspects of existence. The sense of abstract patterning in the fur and in the man's crossed limbs, combined with the distinctive palette featuring pink and sky blue, suggest an origin in the Deccan, possibly Bijapur. The invocation at the lower left, "Oh Prophet of the House of Hashim from thee comes help," referring to the prophet Muhammad, is in Persian. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
