Chinese Figures in a Landscape, from a set of three, late 16th-early 17th century, Traditionally attributed to Kano Eitoku, Japanese, 1543 - 1590, 46 1/8 x 18 3/4 in. (117.16 x 47.63 cm), Ink and color on paper, Japan, 16th-17th century, This trio of paintings shows Chinese gentlemen and several younger attendants in a mountain setting. They may once have been part of a larger set of paintings depicting figures engaged in the so-called Four Accomplishments--music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Given their large scale and cropped compositions, it is possible that they were originally mounted on sliding doors. They may have been damaged and remounted as hanging scrolls in order to salvage the remaining fragments. The facile brushwork delineating the sages' costumes and facial features suggests that they were created by or in the circle of Kanō Eitoku, the renowned leader of the seminal Kanō studio during the late 1500s. The red seals reading 'Eitoku' in the lower corners of the paint

Arrival of the "Southern Barbarians", c. 1600. Japan, Momoyama period (1573-1615). Pair of six-panel folding screens; ink, color, and gold on paper; overall: 146.7 x 337.2 cm (57 3/4 x 132 3/4 in.). These screens show European merchants arriving in Japan. Almost certainly the persons represented are Portuguese, since they are accompanied by Roman Catholic priests. Early in the seventeenth century the Portuguese were forced out of Japan, chiefly because of internal difficulties caused by their missionaries. Later between 1641 and 1853 the Dutch were the only Europeans permitted to trade with Japan, but their presence was restricted to a port town in far western Japan, near present day Nagasaki.

Maharana Jawan Singh of Mewar Receiving the Governor General of India, Lord William Cavendish Bentinck, February 8th, 1832, ca. 1832. Opaque watercolor, gold and silver on cloth, 74 7/16 × 50 3/8 in., 88 lb. (189 × 128 cm, 39.92kg). This large painting depicts an important meeting that took place at the 1832 Ajmer darbar, the first major gathering of India's Rajput rulers with the British governor general. A darbar is an official audience between rulers that includes a series of strictly regulated ceremonial meetings heralded by gun salutes and punctuated by an exchange of nazar (gifts). Maharana Jawan Singh of Mewar (ruled 1828-38), identified here by his gold nimbus and gold patka (sash), receives Lord Bentinck, who is formally attired in an orange coat. They share a throne made specially for the occasion. Jawan Singh's gifts to the British

Zhong Kui (Wade-Giles: Chung Kwei, Japanese: Shoki) is a figure of Chinese mythology. Traditionally regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings, and reputedly able to command 80,000 demons, his image is often painted on household gates as a guardian spirit, as well as in places of business where high-value goods are involved. Zhong Kui's popularity in folklore can be traced to the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (712 to 756). According to Song Dynasty sources, once the Emperor Xuanzong was gravely ill. He had a dream in which he saw two ghosts. The smaller of the ghosts stole a purse from imperial consort Yang Guifei and a flute belonging to the emperor. The bigger ghost, wearing the hat of an official, captured the smaller ghost, tore out his eye and ate it. The bigger ghost then introduced himself as Zhong Kui. He said that he had sworn to rid the empire of evil. When the emperor awoke, he had recovered from his illness. So he commissioned the court painter Wu Daozi to produ

Khwāja Shamsu d-Dīn Muhammad Hāfez-e Shīrāzī (Persian: خواجه شمسالدین محمد حافظ شیرازی‎), known by his pen name Hāfez (1325/1326-1389/1390),was a Persian lyric poet. His collected works composed of series of Persian poetry (Divan) are to be found in the homes of most Persian speakers in Iran and Afghanistan, as well as elsewhere in the world, who learn his poems by heart and use them as proverbs and sayings to this day. His life and poems have been the subject of much analysis, commentary and interpretation, influencing post-fourteenth century Persian writing more than any other author. Themes of his ghazals are the beloved, faith, and exposing hypocrisy. His influence in the lives of Iranians can be found in 'Hafez readings' (fāl-e hāfez, Persian: فال حافظ‎), frequent use of his poems in Persian traditional music, visual art and Persian calligraphy. His tomb in Shiraz is visited often. Adaptations, imitations and translations of Hafez' poems exist in all major languages.

St. Luke Writing in Crown Simon Bening (Flemish, 1483-1561). St. Luke Writing in Crown, 1521. Painting on parchment, 5 3/16 x 3 11/16 in. (13.2 x 9.3 cm). These four miniature paintings depicting the Evangelists were originally part of a book of hours, a type of small prayer book that was designed for wealthy laypeople to use for their personal daily devotions. Such jewel-like images, known as illuminations, were meant to enhance divine contemplation. Here, each Evangelist appears in a detailed, naturalistic setting accompanied by his traditional winged symbol. Saint John sits with his eagle on the rocky shores of the Greek island of Patmos, writing in Hebrew, with a vision of the galloping horsemen of the Apocalypse on the distant shore. Attended by an angel, Saint Matthew pens his Gospel in a scholarly study, with an image of Christ hanging on the far wall. In a similarly appointed study, Saint Mark reviews his Gospel with his winged lion at his feet, surrounded by an elaborate and

The 'Third Alliance Between God and Man' shows Sun Yat-sen (left), founding father of the republic of China, Victor Hugo (centre), French poet and novelist, and Vietnamese poet Nguyen Binh Khiem (right). The Holy See of the Cao Dai is in the Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh, close to the Cambodian frontier, and this syncretic religion - which counts Victor Hugo, Laozi and Jesus among its saints - has also made some Khmer converts. Vietnam has two indigenous religious sects, both of which were established in the 20th century, and both of which are based firmly in the south of the country. Cao Dai or Supreme Altar’ is a syncretic faith combining aspects of the tam giao with Catholicism and is the larger of the two, with an estimated 2 million followers. Cao Dai is an eclectic amalgam of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Catholicism. The second sect, called Hoa Hao or Peace and Happiness’, is centred on Chau Doc in the Mekong Delta. Its followers practise an ascetic and austere form of

The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards. Construction of the Palace began in 1782, during the reign of Ki
