An ancient legend tells us that the Yellow Emperor, while at war in about 2600 BCE, lost his way when his enemy caused a dense fog to descend on his troops. In order to avoid this ever happening again, the Emperor invented the 'South-Pointing Chariot' so that his troops would always be able to find their way when they were on the march. The chariot pre-dated the magnetic compass and used cogs and gears to maintain a constant orientation.Baby carriage, 1946'Ye Tudor' mangle Date: 1889small barrel alcohol on white with cliping pathEtruscan civilization, Bronze trolley, from Vulci, Montalto di Castro, Viterbo Province,1950s kitchen clock and water boiler mounted on wall, Lauf an der Pegnitz, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, EuropeTraveling necessaire, silver, ivory, stamped leather (case), Set consisting of cylindrical silver coffeepot with straight ivory handle projecting from side; circular lid with ivory knop; cylindrical stand; burner; two covered cannisters; knife, 2 spoons. Flutes paired well with the voice and harp, popular instruments of the music room or salon. The flute's louder volume and ability to produce more dramatic dynamic contrasts led to its dominance over the recorder in both private and public music making in the first decades of the eighteenth century.Professional musicians generally used flutes made from wood. This pair's use of ivory and the ornate leather-covered case, which ostentatiously displays the instruments side by side instead of efficiently storing them in stacking trays, as is typical, suggest an aristocratic owner.
