An arquebusier refers to a person who uses an arquebus, a matchlock shoulder gun. A good suit of armor would stop the ball being shot by an arquebus, but if the arquebus was shot at close range, it could penetrate even good armor. It was also effective against cavalry. This weapon was commonly used from the 1400s to the 1600s.

Maarten van Rossum was Lord Van Poederoyen in the Betuwe, general under Charles of Egmont and in the service of Willem van Gulik, Berg and Kleef. The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking-the first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treaties-granted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System. The failure of the treaty to satisfy British goals of improved trade and diplomatic relations led to the Second Opium

A French Dragoon, Study for "The Revolt of Cairo" ca. 1809 Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson French This pastel study of a French dragoon (a military officer) is a study for one of Girodet's most famous paintings, The Revolt of Cairo commissioned by Napoleon in 1809 for the Galerie de Diane in the Tuileries Palace (today the Musée du Louvre), the canvas is today at the Chteau de Versailles. The painting commemorates the Napoleonic armys suppression of an uprising in Cairo following the French invasion and occupation of the city in 1798. Although accounts of the rebellion differ, we know that several hundred French soldiers and several thousand Egyptians lost their lives in the pitched battle that took place inside the Al-Azhar mosque. The subject is unusual for a Napoleonic battle scene in that it features no heroes or identifiable individuals. Girodet was not present and was given no documentary account or images to guide his preparation. His drawings were based on French uniforms and Maml

Horse Armor Made for Johann Ernst, Duke of Saxony-Coburg (1521-1553). Armorer: Kunz Lochner (German, Nuremberg, 1510-1567). Culture: German, Nuremberg. Dimensions: Wt. including saddle 92 lb. (41.73 kg); bit: H. 6 in (15.2 cm); W. 11 in (27.9 cm). Date: dated 1548.Kunz Lochner was one of the few Nuremberg armorers of the mid-sixteenth century to achieve an international reputation. His patrons included the Holy Roman Emperor, the dukes of Saxony, and the king of Poland. This horse armor bears only the Nuremberg mark but can be attributed to Lochner on stylistic grounds. The elaborately embossed and etched decoration of the peytral (chest defense) includes an abbreviated inscription that may be interpreted: 1548 Krist Ich Trau Ganz Vnd Gar Hans Ernst Herzog Zu Sachsen (1548 In Christ I trust wholly, Hans Johann Ernst, Duke of Saxony). Duke Johann Ernst (1521-1553) may have commissioned the horse armor for his attendance at the Diet of Augsburg, a political assembly of the German nobilit
