Three-Quarter Armor ca. 1525 and later Pauldrons and vambraces attributed to Kolman Helmschmid German The pauldrons (shoulder defenses), and vambraces (arm defenses) of this armor are attributed to Kolman Helmschmid based on comparison with his known works. The associated helmets (acc. no. 50.237.2) distinctive snub-nosed visor appears to be a form that he originated and used on three other helmets, all dating from the mid-1520s. The decoration of these elements is typical of the style of Daniel Hopfer of Augsburg (about 1470-1536), a celebrated armor-etcher and printmaker, who is known to have decorated armors made by members of the the Helmschmid family.The remainder of this armor is composed of southern German elements from about 1520 to 1530, except for minor restorations.. Armor for the Tilt ca. 1580 Attributed to Anton Peffenhauser German This armor has an elegant sculptural quality that is characteristic of the finest Augsburg armors. It is identical in appearance to a series of tournament armors ordered by the duke of Bavaria in 1579-80 from Anton Peffenhauser, the leading armorer in Augsburg during the second half of the sixteenth century. In the joust, or tilt, in the German fashion, two contestants armed with blunt lances rode at one another, left side to left side, separated by a barrier (called a tilt), the object beign to break lances or unseat the opponent. Because the left side of the rider was thus particularly vulnerable, it was given additional protection in the form of large, smooth reinforcing plates that would deflect the blow of the lance. Characteristic of these armors are the helm screwed to the breastplate and backplate, the tilt targe (the cape-like defense for the left shoulder) screwed directly to the breastplate, a passguard (the

This illustration of a Chinese soldier, holding and aiming his gun, dates to 1900. The time period in China is the Boxer Rebellion, which was an uprising against foreigners in the country. The Chinese were fighting against British, Americans, Jpanerse and several other countries. Note his queuetraditional hairstyle at the time. It had been imposed on adult Chinese men in the 1600s during the Qing dynasty. The penalty for not doing so was death, as such an infraction of the rules was considered treason. After the fall of the Qing in the 1912, the rule did not apply. The tradition was to shave the temple and forehead every 10 days or so and keep the rest braided.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa (c. 14751519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World. He traveled to the New World in 1500 and, after some exploration, settled on the island of Hispaniola (now Dominican Republic and Haiti). He founded the settlement of Santa María la Antigua del Darién in present-day Colombia in 1510, which was the first permanent European settlement on the mainland of the Americas (a settlement by Alonso de Ojeda the previous year at San Sebastián de Urabá had already been abandoned).

A scathing attack on Whig principles, as embodied in their selection of a presidential candidate for 1848. Here the available candidate is either Gen. Zachary Taylor or Winfield Scott, both of whom were contenders for the nomination before the June convention. The figure sits atop a pyramid of skulls, holding a blood-stained sword. The skulls and sword allude to the bloody but successful Mexican War campaigns waged by both Taylor and Scott, which earned them considerable popularity (a combination of attractiveness and credibility termed availability) among Whigs. The figure here has traditionally been identified as Taylor, but the flamboyant, plumed military hat and uniform are more in keeping with contemporary representations of Scott. The print may have
