Superficial venous thrombosis of the lower limb. Venous valves are folds in the walls of veins that force blood to flow unidirectionally toward the heart, without reflux (see image 1008307). Blood can accumulate and stagnate in the cusps of the valves, forming a thrombus (as here in the internal saphenous vein of the leg).
