The Andalusian dance (El Vito) ca. 1824-1825 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish The title of this print refers to a popular type of jaleo dance, an antecedent of flamenco that was performed by a solo female dancer and accompanied by singing, clapping, guitar, and tambour. After moving to Bordeaux, Goya made this lithograph in the workshop of Cyprien Charles Gaulon. He might have thought the subject would appeal to the Romantic tastes of the French audience, many of whom regarded Spanish customs as alluringly exotic. Exploiting the possibilities of the medium, Goya drew directly on the stone with the lithographic crayon and modulated the areas of light and shade with the scraper, creating a sense of depth. The result is a lively, picturesque scene that demonstrates Goyas bold approach to lithography.. The Andalusian dance (El Vito). Date: 1590-1600.Philip Pouncey first noted in 1965 that this drawing might be a copy after Santi di Tito (as annotated on the verso of this sheet). As pointed out by Carmen Bambach, the Metropolitan's sheet seems to be a very closely related copy of the drawing with Saint Anthony of Padua healing a sick man (Teyler Museum B 71, Haarlem), attributed to the Circle of Santi di Tito by Carel van Tuyll van Serooskerken. This is probably a copy done in Santi di Tito's workshop because the handling of the pen seems close enough to his general manner. Study for "The Enrollment of the Volunteers of 1792" ca. 1848-51 Thomas Couture French Following the Revolution of 1848, the new Second Republic government commissioned Couture to paint "The Enrollment of the Volunteers of 1792" for the Hall of Sessions of the National Assembly. The government sought a unifying message of patriotism by highlighting a historical moment when, amid the turbulence of the Revolution initiated in 1789, Frenchmen of many classes came together in defense of the Republic, then at war with Austria. This study for the left portion of the composition lays out the frieze-like procession of the volunteers. The workmen strain with the labor of pulling a cannon forward, while a young aristocrat following at their heels raises his arm with enthusiasm..
