Götz von Berlichingen Writing His Memoirs 1840-42 or 1849 Eugène Delacroix French Many of Delacroixs graphic works represent literary texts. This sheet is likely a preparatory drawing for a lithograph (shown at right) in an obscure series of prints illustrating Goethes play Götz von Berlichingen, first published in German in 1773. Under house arrest on the orders of Emperor Maximilien I, the noble mercenary soldier Götz is shown writing his memoirs in the company of his wife, Elizabeth. In the lithograph, the young, robust Romantic hero has noticeably aged. The dating of this drawing is ambiguous since Delacroix painted the same subject in 1849. Study for Treaty with Native Americans (from Sketchbook). Artist: John Quincy Adams Ward (American, Urbana, Ohio 1830-1910 New York). Dimensions: 2 13/16 × 4 3/8 in. (7.1 × 11.1 cm). Date: ca. 1860.Ward, a student of Henry Kirke Brown, became known as the "Dean of American Sculpture." In addition to his monumental bronze "Indian Hunter," installed in New York's Central Park in 1869, he pursued several other American Indian subjects in the 1860s. This page from a sketchbook ,which provides an intimate look at the artist's working methods, shows the leader of a group of Indiansaddressing a quartet of soldiers. This scene may be a historical depiction of the Treaty of Greenville, which took place in Ward's native Ohio in 1795, when several local tribes ceded land to the U.S. Government and established a boundary between American Indian territory and lands open to Euro-American settlers. Le Déjeuner de Voltaire à Ferney or Le Souper des Philosophes 1768-1780 Switzerland. The Swiss artist and caricaturist Jean Huber was Voltaireís longtime neighbor and his most frequent portraitist. This anonymous print after a Huber painting imagines some of the leading statesmen, polymaths, writers, and clerics who often hobnobbed with Voltaire coming to supper at his Ferney estate. Voltaire, his hand raised, calls the group to order. Included in the cosmopolitan cast of characters are Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond díAlembert, authors of the famous EncyclopÈdie. Lithography Lesson 1819 France. The painter and printmaker Dominique-Vivant Denon excelled in quick sketches of people and monuments. In 1798 he accompanied a French expedition to Egypt, documenting architectural settings for many of the artifacts Napoleon acquired. Back in France, Denon produced numerous lithographs in the same lively manner and hosted gatherings in which guests attempted to produce lithographs themselves. Here the group admires the skill of one of Denonís female guests, possibly also his pupil. Unusually, she draws a muscular naked man on her thin lithographic stone.
