The spacecraft, filled with experiments and old supplies, can be seen in the grasp of the Space Station Remote Manipulator Systems robot arm or CanadArm2 after it was undocked from the orbital outpost.Forming the backdrop for this image is western Namibia, as the viewer's perspective is generally south-southeastward with the South Atlantic on the right. The Dragon was scheduled to make a landing in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California later in the day.

iss021e030143 (Nov. 19, 2009) --- The newly-arrived Poisk Mini-Research Module-2 is seen docked to the space-facing port of the forward section of the Zvezda service module. Attached to the rear of Poisk is the last stage of a Russian spacecraft that automatically guided and docked the module to the International Space Station. The Russian spacecraft would later undock from Poisk and deorbit for a fiery but safe destruction in Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

ISS025-E-012406 (28 Oct. 2010) --- At 220 miles above Earth, the unattended Soyuz TMA-19 spacecraft, docked to the International Space Station, almost appears to be a giant telescope focusing through a break in the clouds upon several islands in the Galapagos chain. Isabela is the most easily recognizable island among this chain in the Pacific Ocean.

iss054e040196 (Feb. 9, 2018) --- NASA astronaut Scott Tingle captured this view of a sunrise from the International Space Station.

The Soyuz MS-21 crew ship is pictured the day after docking to the Prichal module carrying three new crew Expedition 66 members to the International Space Station. Soyuz Commander and veteran cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev led first time space flyers Sergey Korsakov and Denis Matveev during the three-hour and 17-minute trip that began with a launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

From bottom to top, the Soyuz MS-21 crew ship is docked to the Prichal docking module, which is also attached to the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module. The International Space Station was orbiting 266 miles above the Indian Ocean west of Australia at the time this photograph was taken.

December 13, 2006 - Backdropped by a blue and white Earth, Progress 23 supply vehicle docked to the Zvezda Service Module's aft port of International Space Station, is featured in this image photographed by a STS-116 crewmember while Space Shuttle Discovery was docked with the station.

ISS039-E-013536 (20 April 2014) --- The sun appears brightly in the upper left corner of this photo -- one of an extensive series of still photos documenting the arrival and ultimate capture and berthing of the SpaceX Dragon at the International Space Station, as photographed by the Expedition 39 crew members onboard the orbital outpost. The spacecraft was captured by the space station and successfully berthed following the April 20 arrival.

As the construction continued on the International Space Station (ISS), STS-118 astronaut and mission specialist, Dave Williams, representing the Canadian Space Agency, was anchored on the foot restraint of the Canadarm2 as he participated in the second session of Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) for the mission. Assisting Williams was Rick Mastracchio (out of frame). During the 6 hour, 28 minute space walk, the two removed a faulty control moment gyroscope (CMG-3) and installed a new CMG into the Z1 truss. The failed CMG will remain in its temporary stowage location on the exterior of the station until it is returned to Earth on a later Shuttle mission. The new gyroscope is one of four CMGs that are used to control the orbital attitude of the station.

ISS028-E-016137 (12 July 2011) --- This picture, photographed by NASA astronaut Ron Garan during the spacewalk conducted on July 12, 2011, shows the International Space Station with space shuttle Atlantis docked at right and a Russian Soyuz docked to Pirs, at upper left. In the lower right foreground is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment installed during the STS-134 mission. AMS is a state-of-the-art particle physics detector designed to use the unique environment of space to advance knowledge of the universe and lead to the understanding of the universe's origin by searching for antimatter and dark matter, and measuring cosmic rays.

STS106-314-023 (17 September 2000) --- The International Space Station (ISS), backdropped over Chinas Takla Makan desert and Earths horizon, is photographed after undocking with the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The 35mm frame was exposed by one of the STS-106 crew members onboard the shuttle. The undocking took place on September 17, 2000 at 10:46 p.m. (CDT).

ISS045E028447 (09/25/2015) --- Sunlight shines on the International Space Station as it flies approximately 250 miles over the Earths surface. One of the stations massive solar arrays is visible left, responsible for generating power for all of the various station systems. The Japanese Exposed Facility is visible at the top of the image where experiments are exposed to the vacuum and environment of space. The Japanese HTV-5 cargo vehicle is seen on the right while still docked to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module; the vehicle was unberthed and released on Sept. 28, 2015.

Earlier the STS-119 and Expedition 18 crews concluded 9 days, 20 hours and 10 minutes of cooperative work onboard the shuttle and station. Undocking of the two spacecraft occurred at 2:53 p.m. (CDT) on March 25, 2009.

iss055e035437 (April 29, 2018) --- The SpaceX Dragon resupply ship was gripped by the Canadarm2 robotic arm on April 27, 2018 in preparation for its detachment from the Harmony module and its release back to Earth for splashdown and retrieval in the Pacific Ocean. The coasts of Spain and Portugal are seen as the International Space Station orbited over the Atlantic Ocean.

ISS007-E-13858 (27 August 2003) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and Earths horizon, an unpiloted Progress 10 supply vehicle departs from the Zvezda Service Modules aft docking port on the International Space Station (ISS) carrying its load of trash and unneeded equipment to be deorbited and burned up in the atmosphere. As the Progress undocked, the ISS was flying 240 statute miles over eastern China. The undocking clears the way for the arrival of a new Progress 12, filled with fresh supplies, which is planned to dock to the Station at 10:45 p.m. (CDT) on August 30, 2003.

ISS036-E-029800 (9 Aug. 2013) --- The Canadarm2 moves toward the unpiloted Japanese "Kounotori" H2 Transfer Vehicle-4 (HTV-4) as it approaches the International Space Station. The HTV-4 is delivering 3.6 tons of science experiments, equipment and supplies to the orbiting complex. Earths horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

. iss068e043860 (Jan. 30, 2023) - The Canadarm2 robotic arm is pictured extending away from the International Space Station with flight support equipment gripped in its leading end effector before being jettisoned toward the Earth's atmosphere. The flight hardware secured a pair of roll-out solar arrays inside the SpaceX Dragon cargo ships trunk during its ascent to orbit and rendezvous with the space station in November 2022. The jettisoned support equipment drifted safely away from the station and will eventually harmlessly burn up in the atmosphere with no chance for recontacting the space station.

STS039-19-015 (28 April- 6 May 1991) --- This STS-39 35mm scene shows the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-II) on the end of the remote manipulator system (RMS) end effector. During the eight-day flight, SPAS collected data in both a free-flying mode and while attached to the RMS.

ISS030-E-079919 (16 Feb. 2012) --- Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, Expedition 30 flight engineer, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 15-minute spacewalk, Shkaplerov and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko (out of frame), flight engineer, moved the Strela-1 crane from the Pirs Docking Compartment to begin preparing the Pirs for its replacement next year with a new laboratory and docking module. The duo used another boom, the Strela-2, to move the hand-operated crane to the Poisk module for future assembly and maintenance work. Both telescoping booms extend like fishing rods and are used to move massive components outside the station. On the exterior of the Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), they also installed the Vinoslivost Materials Sample Experiment, which will investigate the influence of space on the mechanical properties of the materials. ISS038-E-050734 (18 Feb. 2014) --- The International Space Station's Canadarm2 unberths the Orbital Sciences Corporation's Cygnus spacecraft after several weeks at the space station. NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins, with assistance from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata, both Expedition 38 flight engineers, used the station's 57-foot Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node at 5:15 a.m. (EST) on Feb. 18, 2014. While Wakata monitored data and kept in contact with the team at Houston's Mission Control Center, Hopkins released Cygnus from the robotic arm at 6:41 a.m. Earth's horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

Improved understanding of lightning and its connections to weather provides crucial insight for weather forecasting, climate change, atmospheric chemistry and physics, and aircraft and spacecraft safety.

STS079-813-023 (16-26 Sept. 1996) --- The docked Russian Mir Space Station is partially visible through the Spacehab viewing port, onboard the space shuttle Atlantis. This photograph is one of four 70mm frames (along with fifteen 35mm frames) of still photography documenting the activities of NASA's STS-79 mission, which began with a Sept. 16, 1996, liftoff from Launch Pad 39A the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and ended with a landing at KSC on Sept. 26, 1996. Onboard for the launch were astronauts William F. Readdy, commander; Terrence W. Wilcutt, pilot; John E. Blaha, Jerome (Jay) Apt, Thomas D. Akers and Carl E. Walz, all mission specialists. On flight day 4, the crew docked with the Mir Space Station. Shannon W. Lucid, who had spent six months aboard Mir, switched cosmonaut guest researcher roles with Blaha. The latter joined fellow Mir-22 crewmembers Valeri G. Korzun, commander, and Aleksandr Y. Kaleri, flight engineer.

Astronauts Hoffman and F. Story Musgrave earlier changed out the Wide FieldPlanetary Camera (WFPC).

ISS032-E-026880 (12 Sept. 2012) --- The International Space Station's Canadarm2 unberths the unpiloted Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-3), filled with trash and unneeded items, in preparation for its release from the station. JAXA astronaut Aki Hoshide and NASA astronaut Joe Acaba, both Expedition 32 flight engineers, used the station's robot arm to grapple the HTV-3 and unberth it from the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node. The cargo craft was released at 11:50 a.m. (EDT) on Sept. 12, 2012.

. iss069e085692 (Sept. 1, 2023) --- Northrop Grumman's Cygnus space freighter, with one of its cymbal-shaped UltraFlex solar arrays, is pictured attached to the Unity module's Earth-facing port on the International Space Station. The orbital outpost was soaring 261 miles above a storm in the Atlantic Ocean at the time of this photograph.

STS030-72-047 (4 May 1989) --- In the early evening hours of Atlantis s first day in space for the four-day STS-30 mission, the Magellan spacecraft is released into space to begin its long journey to the planet Venus for an extensive radar mapping mission. The scene was photographed through Atlantis s aft flight deck windows with a handheld 70mm camera.

During the six-hour, 24-minute spacewalk, Mastracchio and astronaut Clayton Anderson (out of frame), mission specialist, hooked up fluid lines of the new 1,700-pound tank, retrieved some micrometeoroid shields from the Quest airlocks exterior, relocated a portable foot restraint and prepared cables on the Zenith 1 truss for a spare Space to Ground Ku-Band antenna, two chores required before space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132/ULF-4 mission in May.

S77-E-5065 (21 May 1996) --- With a cloudy horizon scene as a backdrop, the Spartan 207 free-flyer is held in the grasp of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) following its re-capture on May 21, 1996. The view was captured with an onboard Electronic Still Camera (ESC). The six-member crew has spent a portion of the early stages of the mission in various activities involving the Spartan 207 and the related Inflatable Antenna Experiment (IAE). The Spartan project is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C.

ISS037-E-002661 (25 Sept. 2013) --- The Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft approaches the International Space Station, carrying Expedition 37 Soyuz Commander Oleg Kotov, NASA Flight Engineer Michael Hopkins and Russian Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy. The Soyuz docked to the Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2) at 10:45 p.m. (EDT) on Sept. 25, 2013.

Fossum and NASA astronaut Ron Garan spent just a little over six and a half hours on their various tasks.

ISS040-E-015679 (19 June 2014) --- Russian cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov (red stripes) and Oleg Artemyev, both Expedition 40 flight engineers, participate in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues on the International Space Station. During the seven-hour, 23-minute spacewalk Skvortsov and Artemyev completed installation and experiment tasks outside the stations Russian segment. The ISS Progress 55 resupply vehicle, docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment, is visible at center. The blackness of space and Earths horizon provide the backdrop for the scene.

iss059e043274 (May 6, 2019) --- The SpaceX Dragon cargo craft is maneuvered toward the Harmony module's Earth-facing port by robotics controllers remotely operating the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Astronaut David Saint-Jacques earlier commanded the Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Dragon as astronaut Nick Hague backed him up and monitored systems.

July 29, 2005 - A fish-eye lens on a digital still camera was used to record this image of the Space Shuttle Discovery from the International Space Station, to which it is docked for several days of joint activities.

iss062e087414 (March 9, 2020) --- The SpaceX Dragon resupply ship is pictured attached to the Earth-facing port on the International Space Station's Harmony module. In the right foreground is the European Space Agency's (ESA) Columbus laboratory module which is attached to the Harmony module's starboard port.

ISS007-E-06980 (11 June 2003) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and Earths horizon, an unmanned Progress supply vehicle approaches the Pirs Docking Compartment (out of frame) attached to the Zvezda Service Module on the International Space Station (ISS), completing a three-day automated flight. The Progress 11 resupply craft, which launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 8, 2003, carried more than two tons of food, fuel, water, supplies and scientific gear for the Expedition 7 crew aboard the Station. The Progress linked up with the ISS at 6:15 a.m. (CDT) on June 11, 2003.

STS088-341-015 (6 Dec. 1998) --- Backdropped against a blanket of heavy cloud cover, the Russian-built FGB, also called Zarya, approaches the Space Shuttle Endeavour and the U.S.-built Node 1, also called Unity (foreground). Inside Endeavour's cabin, the STS-88 crew readied the remote manipulator system (RMS) for Zarya capture as they awaited the rendezvous.

ISS037-E-018505 (22 Oct. 2013) --- The International Space Stations Canadarm2 unberths the Orbital Sciences Cygnus commercial craft after three weeks at the space station. European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, both Expedition 37 flight engineers, were at the controls of the robotics workstation removing Cygnus from the Harmony node then safely releasing it at 7:31 a.m. (EDT) Oct. 22, 2013. On Oct. 23, the Cygnus will fire its engines for the last time at 1:41 p.m. and re-enter Earths atmosphere for destruction over the Pacific Ocean. Earths horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

ISS027-E-036625 (23 May 2011) --- This image of the International Space Station and the docked space shuttle Endeavour, flying at an altitude of approximately 220 miles, was taken by Expedition 27 crew member Paolo Nespoli from the Soyuz TMA-20 following its undocking on May 23, 2011 (USA time). The pictures taken by Nespoli are the first taken of a shuttle docked to the International Space Station from the perspective of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Onboard the Soyuz were Russian cosmonaut and Expedition 27 commander Dmitry Kondratyev; Nespoli, a European Space Agency astronaut; and NASA astronaut Cady Coleman. Coleman and Nespoli were both flight engineers. The three landed in Kazakhstan later that day, completing 159 days in space.
