S128-E-007171 (1 Sept. 2009) --- Astronaut John Danny” Olivas, STS-128 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 35-minute spacewalk, Olivas and astronaut Nicole Stott (out of frame), mission specialist, removed an empty ammonia tank from the station’s truss and temporarily stowed it on the station’s robotic arm. Olivas and Stott also retrieved the European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF) and Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) from the Columbus laboratory module and installed them on Discovery’s payload bay for return. The blackness of space and Earth’s atmosphere provide the backdrop for the scene.

ISS020-E-040621 (17 Sept. 2009) --- Backdropped by a cloud-covered part of Earth, the unpiloted Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) approaches the International Space Station. Once the HTV was in range, NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk and European Space Agency astronaut Frank De Winne, all Expedition 20 flight engineers, used the stations robotic arm to grab the cargo craft and attach it to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node. The attachment was completed at 5:26 (CDT) on Sept. 17, 2009. A Russian spacecraft docked to the station is at bottom right.

Discovery pulled away from the complex at 2:24 a.m. (CDT) on August 6, 2005.

ISS010-E-18843 (27 February 2005) --- Backdropped by scattered clouds above Earth, an unpiloted Progress 16 supply vehicle departs from the International Space Station (ISS) at 10:06 a.m. (CST) February 27, 2005, carrying its load of trash and unneeded equipment to be deorbited and burned up in Earths atmosphere. The undocking clears the way for the arrival of a new Progress 17, planned to launch February 28 and dock with the Station on March 2.

November 26, 2006 - Backdropped against white clouds, the aft section of Endeavour's cargo bay, now holding the multipurpose logistics module Leonardo, is featured in this digital still photo, framed through a window on the International Space Station. Endeavour and the orbital outpost have been docked for almost two weeks while their crews have joined efforts in home improvement on the station and other work.

ISS022-E-068277 (18 Feb. 2010) --- An orbital sunrise is featured in this image photographed by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi, Expedition 22 flight engineer, from a window in the newly-installed Cupola of the International Space Station while space shuttle Endeavour remains docked with the station. A Russian Progress spacecraft, docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment, is visible at right.

iss059e104296 (June 17, 2019) --- A set of three CubeSats are ejected from the Japanese Small Satellite Orbital Deployer attached to a robotic arm outside of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory module. The tiny satellites from Nepal, Sri Lanka and Japan were released into Earth orbit for technology demonstrations. The International Space Station was orbiting 256 miles above the Amazon River in Brazil when an Expedition 59 crewmember took this photograph.

S129-E-006856 (19 Nov. 2009) --- Anchored to a Canadarm2 mobile foot restraint, astronaut Robert L. Satcher Jr., STS-129 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 37-minute spacewalk, Satcher and astronaut Mike Foreman (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a spare S-band antenna structural assembly to the Z1 segment of the stations truss, or backbone. Foreman and Satcher also installed a set of cables for a future space-to-ground antenna on the Destiny laboratory and replaced a handrail on the Unity node with a new bracket used to route an ammonia cable that will be needed for the Tranquility node when it is delivered next year. The two spacewalkers also repositioned a cable connector on Unity, checked S0 truss cable connections, and lubricated latching snares on the Kibo robotic arm and the stations mobile base system.

At the time the photo was taken, the ISS was over the Labrador Sea, southwest of Greenland.

ISS026-E-029244 (24 Feb. 2011) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and Earths horizon, the European Space Agency's "Johannes Kepler" Automated Transfer Vehicle-2 (ATV-2) approaches the aft end of the International Space Station's Zvezda Service Module. Docking of the two spacecraft occurred at 10:59 a.m. (EST) on Feb. 24, 2011.

ISS016-E-035625 (10 April 2008) --- The Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft approaches the International Space Station, carrying Russian Federal Space Agency cosmonauts Sergei Volkov, Expedition 17 commander; Oleg Kononenko, flight engineer; and South Korean spaceflight participant So-yeon Yi. Volkov and Kononenko will spend six months on the station, while Yi will return to Earth April 19 with two of the Expedition 16 crewmembers currently on the complex. Docking with the Pirs Docking Compartment occurred at 8:57 a.m. (EDT) on April 10, 2008.

ISS003-E-7131 (31 October 2001) --- Backdropped by Earths horizon and the blackness of space, this distant view shows a Soyuz spacecraft after undocking from the International Space Station (ISS) carrying the Soyuz taxi crew, Commander Victor Afanasyev, Flight Engineer Konstantin Kozeev and French Flight Engineer Claudie Haignere, ending their eight-day stay on the station. Afanasyev and Kozeev represent Rosaviakosmos, and Haignere represents ESA, carrying out a flight program for CNES, the French Space Agency, under a commercial contract with the Russian Aviation and Space Agency. S120-E-006255 (25 Oct. 2007) --- The International Space Station is featured in this image photographed by a STS-120 crewmember as Space Shuttle Discovery approaches the station during rendezvous and docking activities on flight day three. Docking occurred at 7:40 a.m. (CDT) on Oct. 25, 2007, as the two spacecraft flew over the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of North Carolina.

ISS018-E-009839 (30 Nov. 2008) --- Backdropped by a blue and white Earth, an unpiloted Progress supply vehicle approaches the International Space Station, bringing more than two tons of food, fuel, oxygen and other supplies to the Expedition 18 crewmembers aboard the station. Progress 31 docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment at 6:28 a.m. (CST) on Nov. 30, after a four day flight from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

ISS041-E-033463 (24 Sept. 2014) --- SpaceX's uncrewed Dragon cargo spacecraft is docked to the International Space Station after arriving on Sept. 23 with a load of supplies and equipment for the three crew members currently onboard the orbital outpost and the three who will join them soon.

STS030-10-008 (4-8 May 1989) --- Since the beginning manned space travel, astronauts have taken with them items of personal sentiment. In case of Mark C. Lee, STS-30 mission specialist, a picture of a cow testifies to his background as one reared on a Wisconsin farm. The scene, through a flight deck aft window, also shows Earth some 160 nautical miles away.

ISS040-E-006000 (29 May 2014) --- One of the six Expedition 40 crew members positioned himself in the Cupola of the Earth-orbiting International Space Station to capture this image of two Russian spacecraft docked to the orbital outpost. The recently-docked Soyuz 39 (TMA-13M) spacecraft, which brought up the Expedition 40/41 crew, can be seen in the foreground docked to MRM1 (Rassvet); while cargo carrier Progress 55 is attached to Pirs in the background.

ISS039-E-000143 (11 March 2014) --- As photographed by one of the Expedition 39 crew members aboard the International Space Station, the Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft heads toward Earth with the Expedition 38 crew aboard. Onboard the Soyuz were NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins and cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy. The trio had served 166 days in Earth orbit as members of the Expedition 37 and 38 crews.

The view taken from onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour during relative separation of the two spacecraft following undocking operations. Thus ending the eighth Shuttle/Mir joint docking mission. This ESC view was taken on January 29, 1998, at 14:36:19 MET.

ISS018-E-043618 (28 March 2009) --- Backdropped against Earth's horizon and the blackness of space, Soyuz TMA-14 is photographed from the International Space Station as the two spacecraft approach each other in Earth orbit on March 28 prior to a docking that delivers the Expedition 19 crew to the orbital outpost.

ISS020-E-041981 (24 Sept. 2009) --- The exterior of the Japanese Kibo complex of the International Space Station and the station's Canadarm2 (bottom) are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 20 crew member on the station. European Space Agency astronaut Frank De Winne and NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, both Expedition 20 flight engineers, used the controls of the Japanese Experiment Module Robotic Manipulator System (JEM-RMS) in Kibo to grapple and transfer two Japanese payloads from the Exposed Pallet to their Exposed Facility locations -- first HICO/Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean & RAIDS/Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detection System (HREP), then Superconducting Submillimeter-wave Limb-emission Sounder (SMILES).

Docking Maneuvers During Apollo 9

SL3-114-1625 (July-September 1973) --- An excellent view of the expended S-IVB second stage of the Skylab 3/Saturn 1B space vehicle is seen in this photograph taken from the Skylab 3 Command and Service Module (CSM) in Earth orbit. The land mass below is Italy and France, with part of the Mediterranean Sea visible. This photograph was taken with a handheld 70mm Hasselblad camera using a 100mm lens, and medium speed Ektachrome film.

ISS026-E-033204 (10 March 2011) --- In the grasp of the International Space Stations Canadarm2, the Kounotori2 H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-2) is moved from the space-facing side of the Harmony node back to the Earth-facing port of Harmony. HTV-2 had been moved to the top of Harmony prior to space shuttle Discoverys arrival for the STS-133 mission. The HTV-2, loaded with trash and materials no longer needed by the station crew, will be unberthed for the final time on March 28 and deorbited the following day. Earths horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

S126-E-011973 (26 Nov. 2008) --- The Canadian-built Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS), in its parked position, and part of the International Space Station are featured in this image, photographed over the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia and Tennessee by one of the Endeavour crew members on the eve of Thanksgiving. The OBSS, on the end of the Canadarm, awaits the final part of its STS-126 role when it will inspect the shuttle one more time, following separation of the orbiter from the space station in a couple of days. When that task is complete, it will be stowed across the payload bay from the robot arm.

In this illustration, a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft approaches the International Space Station for docking. NASA is partnering with Boeing and SpaceX to build a new generation of human-rated spacecraft capable of taking astronauts to the station and expanding research opportunities in orbit. SpaceX's upcoming Demo-1 flight test is part of NASAs Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract with the goal of returning human spaceflight launch capabilities to the United States.

This is an STS-61B onboard photo of astronauts Ross and Spring on the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) as they approach the erected Assembly Concept for Construction of Erectable Space Structure (ACCESS).

This still image of the Hubble Space Telescope was captured by an STS-125 crew member as the two spacecraft continue their relative separation. During the week five spacewalks were performed to complete the final servicing mission for the orbital observatory.

51I-35-078 (30 Aug 1985) --- Typhoons Pat (left) and Odessa in the western Pacific. Of the many tropical cyclones photographed by the STS 51-I crew, the dual typhoons of Pat and Odessa were the most unusual. The twin typhoons constitute a Fujiwara system of connected cyclones first described by the Japanese meteorologist after whom the phenomena has been named. Never before have such paired typhoons been photographed from orbit.

ISS037-E-000030 (10 Sept. 2013) --- The Soyuz TMA-08M spacecraft departs from the International Space Stations Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2) and heads toward a landing in a remote area near the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, on Sept. 11, 2013 (Kazakhstan time). Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, Expedition 36 commander; along with NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin, both flight engineers, are ending a five-and-a-half month stay at the space station where they served as members of the Expedition 35 and 36 crews.

ISS020-E-016484 (2 July 2009) --- A portion of the International Space Station is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 20 crew member aboard the Soyuz TMA-14 spacecraft during the relocation of the Soyuz from the Zvezda Service Modules aft port to the Pirs Docking Compartment. Cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, commander; along with NASA astronaut Michael Barratt and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, both flight engineers, undocked the Soyuz spacecraft at 4:26 p.m. (CDT) and docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment at 4:54 p.m. on July 2, 2009.

ISS031-E-071199 (25 May 2012) --- With clouds over Earth forming a backdrop, the SpaceX Dragon commercial cargo craft is photographed during grappling operations with the Canadarm2 robotic arm at the International Space Station. Expedition 31 Flight Engineers Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers grappled Dragon at 9:56 a.m. (EDT) and used the robotic arm to berth Dragon to the Earth-facing side of the station's Harmony node at 12:02 p.m. May 25, 2012. Dragon became the first commercially developed space vehicle to be launched to the station to join Russian, European and Japanese resupply craft that service the complex while restoring a U.S. capability to deliver cargo to the orbital laboratory. Dragon is scheduled to spend about a week docked with the station before returning to Earth on May 31 for retrieval.

iss042e016906 (11/28/2014) --- The Space Station Integrated Kinetic Launcher for Orbital Payload Systems (SSIKLOPS), or Cyclops, launch platform with Special Purpose Inexpensive Satellite (SpinSat) attached is grappled by the Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) small fine Arm (SFA) in preparation for the release of SpinSat.

ISS017-E-019552 (14 Oct. 2008) --- The Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft approaches the International Space Station, carrying NASA astronaut Michael Fincke, Expedition 18 commander; Russian Federal Space Agency cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov, Soyuz commander and flight engineer; and American spaceflight participant Richard Garriott. Fincke and Lonchakov will spend six months on the station, while Garriott will return to Earth on Oct. 23 with two of the Expedition 17 crewmembers currently on the complex. Eastern Romania just north of the Black Sea port of Constanta with the lower Danube River floodplain along the left side and forested parts of the Babadagului Plateau at the top form the backdrop for the scene.

S125-E-009646 (18 May 2009) --- Astronaut John Grunsfeld, STS-125 mission specialist, positioned on a foot restraint on the end of Atlantis remote manipulator system (RMS), participates in the missions fifth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues to refurbish and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. During the seven-hour and two-minute spacewalk, Grunsfeld and astronaut Andrew Feustel (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a battery group replacement, removed and replaced a Fine Guidance Sensor and three thermal blankets (NOBL) protecting Hubbles electronics.

iss050e037492 (01/31/2017) --- The Russian Progress 64 cargo craft is photographed backing away from the Pirs Docking Compartment shortly after departure. The unpiloted spacecraft delivered several tons of supplies to the station and spent 196 days attached to the orbiting laboratory

. iss069e090130 (Sept. 19, 2023) --- The Canadian Space Agency's major contribution to the International Space Station, the 57.7-foot-long Canadarm2 robotic arm, which can maneuver spacecraft, science payloads, and spacewalking astronauts, is pictured as the orbital lab soared 259 miles above a cloudy Texas.

ISS020-E-040622 (17 Sept. 2009) --- Backdropped by a cloud-covered part of Earth, the unpiloted Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) approaches the International Space Station. Once the HTV was in range, NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk and European Space Agency astronaut Frank De Winne, all Expedition 20 flight engineers, used the stations robotic arm to grab the cargo craft and attach it to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node. The attachment was completed at 5:26 (CDT) on Sept. 17, 2009. A Russian spacecraft docked to the station is at bottom right.

ISS011-E-05015 (24 April 2005) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and airglow of Earths horizon, the Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft departs from the International Space Station (ISS) carrying astronaut Leroy Chiao, Expedition 10 commander and NASA ISS science officer; cosmonaut Salizhan S. Sharipov, flight engineer representing Russia's Federal Space Agency; and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Roberto Vittori of Italy. Undocking occurred at 1:41 p.m. (CDT) on April 24.

ISS012-E-16907 (3 Feb. 2006) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and Earths horizon, a spacesuit-turned-satellite called SuitSat began its orbit around the Earth after it was released by the Expedition 12 crewmembers during a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) on Feb. 3, 2006. SuitSat, an unneeded Russian Orlan spacesuit, was outfitted by the crew with three batteries, internal sensors and a radio transmitter, which faintly transmitted recorded voices of school children to amateur radio operators worldwide. The suit will enter the atmosphere and burn up in a few weeks.

ISS014-E-12434 (19 Jan. 2007) --- Backdropped by a blue and white Earth, an unpiloted Progress supply vehicle approaches the International Space Station. The Progress 24 resupply craft launched at 8:12 p.m. (CST) on Jan. 17, 2007 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to deliver 2.5 tons of food, fuel, oxygen and other supplies to the Expedition 14 crewmembers onboard the station. Progress automatically docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment at 8:59 p.m. (CST) on Jan. 19 as the spacecraft and the station flew approximately 220 miles above a point near the South Atlantic off the southeast coast of Uruguay.

Launched on July 26 2005, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-114 was classified as Logistics Flight 1. Among the Station-related activities of the mission were the delivery of new supplies and the replacement of one of the orbital outpost's Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs). STS-114 also carried the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module and the External Stowage Platform-2. A major focus of the mission was the testing and evaluation of new Space Shuttle flight safety, which included new inspection and repair techniques. Upon its approach to the International Space Station (ISS), the Space Shuttle Discovery underwent a photography session in order to assess any damages that may have occurred during its launch and/or journey through Space. The missions third and final Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) included taking a close-up look and the repair of the damaged heat shield. STS106-709-026 (8-20 September 2000) --- The STS-106 crew members used a70mm handheld camera to capture thisview of the International Space Station (ISS) over a moderately cloud-coveredland area. The station component nearest the camera is the U.S.-built Unity node,which is connected with the Russian-built Functional Cargo Block (FGB) or Zarya. The FGB was linked in July with the Service Module or Zvezda,seen near the bottom of ISS in this angle. On the far end, next to the service module, is the Progress supply ship, which joined ISS in August.

ISS038-E-056324 (25 Feb. 2014) --- A set of NanoRacks CubeSats is photographed by an Expedition 38 crew member after the deployment by the NanoRacks Launcher attached to the end of the Japanese robotic arm. The CubeSats program contains a variety of experiments such as Earth observations and advanced electronics testing. International Space Station solar array panels are at left. Earth's horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

ISS026-E-027323 (16 Feb. 2011) --- The Expedition 26 crew member aboard the International Space Station who snapped this photograph of the Ariane 5 rocket, barely visible in the far background, just after lift off from Europes Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, and the rest of the crew have a special interest in the occurrence. ESAs second Automated Transfer Vehicle, Johannes Kepler, was just a short time earlier (21:50 GMT or 18:50 Kourou time on Feb. 16, 2011) launched toward its low orbit destination and eventual link-up with the ISS. The unmanned supply ship is planned to deliver critical supplies and reboost the space station during its almost four-month mission. The elbow of Canadarm2 is in the foreground.

ISS024-E-014240 (12 Sept. 2010) --- Backdropped by Earths horizon and the blackness of space, an unpiloted ISS Progress resupply vehicle approaches the International Space Station, bringing about 2 tons of food, fuel, oxygen, propellant and supplies for the Expedition 24 crew members aboard the station. Progress 39 successfully docked to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module at 7:58 a.m. (EDT) on Sept. 12, 2010. The docking was executed flawlessly by the Kurs automated rendezvous system.

Backdropped against the Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)is shown sporting new and modified solar arrays stowed against its barrel. Orbiting Earth at an altitude of 325 nautical miles, an astronaut begins other repairs of the HST while perched atop a foot restraint on shuttle Endeavour's remote manipulator system arm. The 59th and final Shuttle flight of 1993 was one of most challenging and complex marned missions ever attempted. During record five back-to-back space walks totaling 35 hours and 28 minutes, two teams of astronauts completed the first servicing of the HST. The STS-061 mission was launched aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor on December 2, 1993.

STS077-716-050 (19-29 May 1996) --- With part of the Pacific Ocean and almost the entire state of California as a backdrop, this scene of the Space Shuttle Endeavours cargo bay was photographed by a crew member on the aft flight deck. Spacehab-4s module is in the foreground, flanked by the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm and the Spartan-207 payload, both in stowed position. Sunglint on the Earth scene accentuates the bay area of San Francisco. The San Andreas Fault can also easily be traced not far inalnd from the coastline.
