Another traveler is preparing to wash his feet in a water basin at the entrance to an inn where he will spend the night. Information about the print series can be seen in the yellow cartouches inside the inn, which read "The Tokaido PictureContinued," "Engraver Jirobei," "Printer, Heibei," and "Painting(s) by Ichiryūsai." The Minister Toru Daijin Standing by a Lake Beneath a Crescent Moon, from the series A True Mirror of Chinese and Japanese Poetry, 1834-35. Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849). Goyu: Main street of the village at nightfall and female touts dragging travellers into the teahouse on the right, where one is already resting. The large circle on the wall bears the sign of the publisher of the series, Take-no-Uchi. On the signboard inside are given the names of the engraver, Jirobei; the printer, Heibei; and the artist, Ichiryusai. This station was lined with many inns and restaurants. The waitresses were renowned for their persistence in trying to entice customers into their shops. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. We can see not only his use of color to heighten the exotic ambiance of the Ryukyu Islands, but also his imaginative power to make alien islands familiar in the guise of Eight Views. The "Armor-Hanging Pine" was a grand, oddly shaped tree from which, legend has it, the warrior Minamoto Yoshiie (1041-1108) hung his armor when he rested there on his way north to subjugate the Abe clan. By Hiroshige's time, the tree would have been about eight hundred years old. The bluff on which it stoodHakkeizaka, or "Eight Views Slope"was named for its panorama. In the immediate foreground are three samurai, identifiable by their double swords but unusual for their Western pants, a recent import popular among younger samurai. The identical parasols, uneven procession, and diverse dress of the women ahead mark them as a group of merchant-class tourists. Dark forest of trees on further shore of river. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.
