Fukurokuju however has a huge elongated head and it is also said that we are facing here just one deity who appears in two different manifestations. With this mixture of styles, this piece can be recognized as part of a rare but distinct group of sword guards currently categorized under the term Asian Export Sword Guards” that were commissioned by maritime traders such as the Dutch. Judging from the holes on its back and on the top center, this piece may have been an ornament, however its exact function cannot be deciphered until more archaeological evidence becomes available.
