Japan: 'Peony and Bamboo by a Rock'. Hanging scroll painting by Ike Gyokuran (1727-1784), 1768. Ike Gyokuran (1727-1784), birth name Machi and art-name Gyokuran, was a Japanese Bunjinga/Nanga (literati) painter, poet and calligrapher. She was known as Tokuyama Gyokuran before her marriage to fellow artist Ike no Taiga. He taught her the Bunjinga/Nanga painting style, while she taught him poetry in the Japanese waka style.

Visiting Dai Kui on a Snowy Night 1368-1644 China. This scene depicts the legendary story of Wang Huizhi (d. 388), the eccentric son of one of Chinaís most renowned calligraphers. As the fifth-century text New Account of Tales of the World (Shishuo xinyu) describes, Wang awoke in the midst of a snowy night and, inspired by a glass of wine, recalled the poem ìSummons to a Retired Gentleman.î He then impulsively set out in a small boat to visit his reclusive friend Dai Kui. Upon arriving at Daiís gate, however, Wang left without entering. Asked to explain his irrational behavior, he replied, ìI originally went on the strength of an impulse, and when the impulse was spent, I turned backî (translated by Richard Mather). Wang appears here huddled in his boat, which is paddled by an attendant clothed in a straw raincoat.One or more large-scale compositions like this were typically commissioned for display in the grand reception halls of wealthy merchants and government officials. Morning Glory from Album of Illustrations for the Tale of Genji, 1600s. Japan, Edo period (1615-1868). This album contains illustrations for the classic literary work the Tale of Genji, authored in the 1000s by Murasaki Shikibu, an aristocrat of the Heian period (794-1185) court. The scenes are painted in the white drawing” (hakuby?) mode, in which a fine ink line is used to depict figures and spaces with great subtlety, punctuated only occasionally by traces of red pigment for a character’s lips, a detail of a garment, or a decorative element. These two scenes illustrate episodes from the chapters Thin Veil of Cloud” (Usugumo) and Barrier Gate” (Sekiya).

Mist and Rain in Helin Pan Simu Chinese 1841 The soft, wet washes in this landscape signal the brushwork lineage of Mi Fu, a famous calligrapher, painter, and connoisseur of the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127). Seven hundred years after his death, Mi was celebrated in the city of Zhenjiang by painters like Pan Simu, who wanted to build a regional school of painting based there. This paintings stated site, Helin, was the temple near which Mi was buried. Square Blackwork Design in Silhouette Style with Schweifwerk and Grotesque Figures 1617 Esaias von Hulsen Dutch This sheet is part of a series of square grotesque designs by the goldsmith Esaias von Hulsen. The patterns he designed for this series are very complex compilations of animals, human figures and various different objects placed in a network of thin strips characterized by many C-Volutes, also known as Schweifwerk. Decorations such as these go back to Roman mural decorations, the most famous of which were to be found in the Domus Aurea in Rome. Renaissance and Baroque artists developed these grotesques further and came up with many modern’ manifestations. Von Hulsen’s prints are remarkable because he is one of the first to break the Renaissance tradition of creating symmetrical designs..
