Boy Leading an Ox Along the Farm Path, late 13th century, 8 3/4 x 9 in. (22.23 x 22.86 cm), Ink and color on silk, China, 13th century, Using a rather extreme aerial perspective, the artist provides a detailed scene of a boy leading a water buffalo home at dusk along a river or large canal. They walk on an elevated path that is part of the dike system forming the rice paddies to their left. While at first glance this small fan painting seems a poetic interpretation of farm life, it also symbolizes the harmonious relationship among human, animal, and nature espoused by the Daoists. The artist has skillfully condensed a remarkably wide panorama of varied landscape into only a few inches of silk.

The Shadows on the Wall (Chrysanthemums). Artist: Adolf de Meyer (American (born France), Paris 1868-1946 Los Angeles, California). Dimensions: 34.7 x 26.7 cm (13 11/16 x 10 1/2 in.). Date: ca. 1906.Focusing his camera not on a still life per se, but on its evanescent trace, de Meyer creates a composition that approaches abstraction. He later applied a similar handling of light and shadow to enhance the drama of his fashion photographs. Here, the shadow of a vase of flowers cast onto the wall has the effect of a Japanese lacquered screen. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
