Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series opens with spring. Scenes 1 though 42 represent the First to the Third Months, which are considered in Japan to be the spring season. Typically, early spring is marked by the festivities celebrated at the New Year, which begins the season. Blossoming plum trees are associated with the middle of spring, signifying the end of the cold weather and the beginning of the warm season. The shrine was dedicated in the early 1660s as a part of the campaign to open the east bank of the Sumida for urban settlement in the wake of the devastating Meireki fire of 1657. The dedication to Tenjin, the deified Sugawara Michizane (845-903), patron saint of learning and calligraphy, is said to have been inspired by the personal veneration of the shogun Ietsuna (1641-80). Nobukazu Watanabe was an artist and printmaker of the late Meiji period. The time of ukiyo-e traditional Japanese woodblock prints was passing. Photography and lithography replaced more and more the old craft. Publishers and artists tried to keep themselves afloat with print subjects of the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, images from the imperial court and history scenes.

This design, like a number of others by Utagawa Hiroshige, is known in other versions one printed entirely in grayish tints (as here), and one printed in a range of soft greens and browns. Normally, prints produced with a monochromatic palette are thought to have been made earlier than more colorful versions. However, a close examination of this sheet alongside others with the color scheme described above indicates that the monochromatic version of the design is probably later than the state with more color.. Enjoying the Wilderness in an Autumn Grove dated 1339 Ni Zan Chinese Until the early 1340s, Ni Zan lived the life of a wealthy dilettante, spending his time among the precious books, antiques, and flowers of his Pure and Secluded Pavilion. His painting style at the time, as seen here, exhibits a studied archaism in which his interest in descriptive detail is at odds with his self-conscious use of calligraphic "hemp fiber" brushstrokes in the manner of tenth-century masters. Ni's gentleman seated in a rustic pavilion is shorthand for the scholar in his studio. His florid poem exhibits a similarly precious quality of one entirely absorbed in his immediate surroundings. Although we cannot accurately identify them, the buildings and scenery are comparable to those found in eighteenth-century woodblock illustrations of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing and the Mountain Resort in Chengde. The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaid ( Kiso Kaid Rokujky-tsugi) or Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Road, is a series of ukiyo-e works created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). There are 71 total prints in the series (one for each of the 69 post stations and Nihonbashi; Nakatsugawa-juku has two prints). The common name for the Kiso Kaid is 'Nakasend' or 'Central Mountain Highway', so this series is salso commonly referred to as the Sixty-nine Stations of the Nakasend. The Nakasend was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capitol of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Nakasend connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. It was an alternate route to the Tkaid and travelled through the central part of Honsh, thus giving rise to its name, which means 'Central Mountain Road'. Wang Jian (1598-1677), style name Xuanzhao and pseudonyms Xiangbi and Ranxiang Anzhu, was a Chinese painter born in Taicang. He lived during the end of the Ming Dynasty and the first decades of the Qing Dynasty.
