A Poet and Mount FujiFrom the Spring Rain Collection (Harusame shū), vol. 3 ca. 1820s Yashima Gakutei Japanese Surimono are privately published woodblock prints, usually commissioned by individual poets or poetry groups as a form of New Years greeting card. The poems, most commonly kyōka (witty thirty-one-syllable verse), inscribed on the prints usually include felicitous imagery connected with spring, which in the lunar calendar begins on the first day of the first month. Themes of surimono are often erudite, frequently alluding to Japanese literary classics in both texts and images.This album forms part of a set of three containing more than four hundred surimono. The prints are arranged on facing leaves according to themes or in a way that creates an attractive arrangement of designs, complementary in both color and shape. The printing techniques, pigments, and paper used for surimono were often the highest quality, and represent the epitome of late Edo-period woodblock printing..

Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833 - February 6, 1904, also known as or Ochiai Yoshiiku), was a Japanese printmaker and newspaper illustrator. The son of a tea house proprietor, he was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Utagawa went to school with Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, recognized as the last great masters of Ukiyo (woodblock printing). Eimei nijuhasshuku (28 Famous Murders with Verse)., also known as the 'Bloody Prints', is a collection of Japanese ukiyo-e from the 1860s, which depicted gruesome acts of murder or torture based on historical events or scenes in Kabuki plays. Although most of the works are solely violent by nature, it is perhaps the first known example of ero guro or the erotic grotesque in Japanese culture, an art sub-genre which depicts either erotic or extreme images of violence and mutilation.

Courtesan and Attendant with a Cage of Fireflies ca. 1770 Ippitsusai Bunchō Japanese Nishikigi and an attendant are captured before an open doorway as they stroll on a hot summer night. Their way is lit by lanterns in a wisteria arbor and by a cage of fireflies. Perhaps owing to the season, Nishikigi is not wearing the brocade costume suggested by her name but a silk kosode with abbreviated decorations of bamboo at the edges of the hem and sleeves. Her tiny arms are visible through the sheer fabric. The trailing ends of her obi, tied high above her waist, echo the curve of her body. Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Nonomiya (Nonomiya), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

Catering to this interest, artists created prints that featured subjects from the country's feudal times. In 1896, Kiyochika designed a series featuring women from different eras within the Edo period (1603-1868). For this print, he depicted a beauty with a large chignon and boldly patterned kimono-styles prevalent in the Kan'ei (1624-44) and Shøhø (1644-48) eras. Kiyochika even rendered the details of her physiognomy in a manner reminiscent of those by the 18th century artists. The silhouettes of boats in the distance suggest that this beauty, too, is in a boat and enjoying an evening river cruise, a favorite summer pastime

Nakamura Shikan IV as the Fishmonger Aratota 1841 Hasegawa Sadamasu Japanese This “large-head” portrait captures the energetic presence of the renowned Osaka actor Shikan IV. He is shown in the role of the humble fishmonger from a performance of Rapeseed Blossom Rites at Tenmang Shrine held at the Naka Theater in Osaka in 1841. The play is one of the popular dramatizations of the life of courtier-poet Sugawara no Michizane, who was unjustly exiled from the imperial court and eventually deified to quell his angry spirit..
