Hotei. Artist: Ogata Korin (Japanese, 1658-1716). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image: 11 1/4 × 14 1/2 in. (28.5 × 36.8 cm)Overall with mounting: 42 1/2 × 26 9/16 in. (108 × 67.4 cm). Date: after 1704.Hotei (Chinese: Budai) is one of the most beloved characters of Zen Buddhism and is believed to be an avatar of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. Potbellied with a shaven head, this cheerful, blissful monk is said to have roamed the countryside in the late ninth to early tenth century in the area of Mount Siming, in southern China, carrying his few belongings in a patched cloth bag. Hotei was probably first portrayed in painting soon after his death and later entered the folklore of China and Japan as one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (Shichi fukujin). In his ink paintings of august East Asian mythological and historical personages, Ogata Korin often portrayed the seven gods in a more playful aspect, as seen here. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The pair of figures came to represent an iconoclastic aspect of Chan (Japanese: Zen) monastic practice and was a popular theme in Japanese painting. The quietness of the street tells us it is late night or early morning. We are in the heart of the city in the sector popularly known as Momendana ("cotton shops"). Scholars have surmised that the two geisha are returning home after an evening out, their slight disarray and sense of tipsiness enhanced by the concern in the attendant's arched eyebrow. Nearby, behind the lifted cloth curtain, two merchants sit among piles of cotton fabric, closing up their business. Asian Art 4th month of 1858

Parody of Murasaki Shikibu at Her Desk ca. 1710 Okumura Masanobu Japanese What looks like a depiction of an Edo-period courtesan at a writing table is actually a parodic image of The Tale of Genjis author, Murasaki Shikibu. According to legend, Murasaki secluded herself at Ishiyamadera Temple, where her contemplation of the moons reflection on Lake Biwa, as well as divine intervention, inspired her to begin writing the romantic narrative of courtly life. While most imaginary portraits show her in eleventh-century dress, here she appears clad in the fashion of the artists own day. The printmaker, painter, and poet Okumura Masanobu was among the early ukiyo-e artists who depicted famous female writers and their characters in the guise of commoners.. Courtesan Reading a Letter mid-18th century Ishikawa Toyonobu The seated women in elegant red tie-dyed robes with a white over-cloak decorated with budding willows has her obi sash tied in front, identifying her as a courtesan of the pleasure quarters. She holds two sheets of paper of a variety that can be used for letters, poems, and drawings. In front of her is arrayed a lacquer box with writing implements and a lit candle, indicating a nocturnal setting. The mythical beast called a hakutaku (Chinese: baize), shown in the painting in the alcove signed Toyonobu,” derives from Chinese legend. Above it is an excerpt from the Japanese encyclopedia Records of the Four Seas (Kairoku) stating that the Yellow Emperor encountered this fantastical beast while on a tour of eastern regions and that it dictated to him accounts of supernatural creatures in the world and how to avoid being haunted or harmed by them. Thus images of the hakutaku were said to ward off disease and harmful influences.

Man Sleeping on a Bamboo Couch Unidentified artist The three-panel screen painting within this painting creates a metaphorical, as well as illusionistic, space within an intimate composition. The sleeping scholar, his contented face turned toward the viewer, seems to be dreaming peacefully. The artist cannot depict the gentleman's dream, but the mesmerizing pattern of waves covering the screen that encloses the man is highly suggestive of his serene state of mind.. For most of the twentieth century, Asakusa was the major entertainment district in Tokyo. The Rokku or 'Sixth District' was famous as a theatre district, featuring famous cinemas such as the Denkikan. The area was heavily damaged by US bombing raids during World War II, particularly the March 1945 firebombing of Tokyo. The area was rebuilt after the war, but has now been surpassed by Shinjuku and other colorful areas in the city, in its role as a pleasure district.

Soga was a student of Takada Keiho, an artist of the Kano School, which was influenced by Chinese culture and techniques, though he preferred the brush style of the Muromachi period, which had already gone out of fashion 150 years before his birth.
