Lady-in-Waiting at Edo Castle ca. 1854-60 (Ansei era) Utagawa Kuniyoshi A young woman, her cheeks flushed a faint pink, rests an arm on a low, single-panel wooden screen as she gazes intently at some activity in the distance. Her dark grey outer robe bears a design of green leaves and pink blossoms; the dark orange obi around her waist is decorated with repeated floral motifs. A bright red robe and white under robe are visible at her neck, and her high chignon is tied with white cloth ribbons and features a hairpin terminating in a gilded ornament in the shape of a cluster of cherry blossoms. From her costume, hairstyle and an old inscription on the storage box, we can identify her as one of the ladies-in-waiting based permanently in the women’s quarters (oku) of the Shogun’s castle in Edo.Her long, narrow oval face is typical of many of the Kuniyoshi’s depictions of women. The paintings were believed to have auspicious properties; those hoping for a good match in marriage might buy a picture of the Maiden. The character later appeared in kabuki theater and was so popular that an entire play was eventually written around her. This classical depiction shows the Maiden as a beautiful young woman, or bijin, dancing with a wisteria branch over her shoulder. Settei, an Osaka artist, was famous for his delicately painted bijin and erotic imagery. The calligraphic inscription, by the Osaka kyōka poet Senkatei Karitsu (1748-1789), indicates that Settei painted the beauty in the spirit of Matabeis brush, a reference to the legendary found

Meiji Dance Recital 1880-1889 Japan. In this print, a musical dance performance takes place on temple grounds under flowering cherry trees. At center stage, a dancer goes through her steps to the accompaniment of three musicians, playing flute, drum, and shamisen. At this spring performance, new members of the dancing and musical schools are presented to the public (just as they are in Japan to this day). Inscriptions on the print provide the names of the two young women who are being presented, Ishida Sen and Ishida Tami, perhaps sisters or members of the same establishment.Similar presentation surimono, created to highlight new, promising students, were made from the mid-19th century onward. This is a relatively late example and noteworthy for the use of Western aniline dyes and for the incorporation of Western elements like the gentleman at the bottom right.. Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Kindling Salesgirl (Kurokiuri), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Standing Courtesan early 18th century Kaigetsud Ando A courtesan, statuesque and regal in pose, has paused her procession to glance back, perhaps to acknowledge an admirer. Kaigetsud Ando was the founder of a studio of artists that produced woodblock prints and paintings of the high-ranking women of the demimonde. Duke Wen of Jin Recovering His State mid-12th century Li Tang Chinese An important example of early "history painting," Duke Wen of Jin Recovering His State illustrates episodes from the life of Chonger of the state of Jin, who, after spending nineteen years in exile, returned to Jin as Duke Wen (r. 636-628 B.C.) to dominate the other feudal princes. This triumphant story of political recovery was used by the first Southern Song emperor, Gaozong, who had been a hostage of the Jurchen Jin before he escaped to reestablish the Song court in the south at Hangzhou. As emperor, he sponsored a number of narrative painting and calligraphy projects extolling the virtues and legitimacy of his "dynastic revival."Zhou Mi (1232-1298) ascribed the painting to Li Tang and the text to Gaozong. Hanshan and Shide Yosa Buson Japanese early 1770s The celebrated painter-poet Yosa Buson has portrayed a pair of legendary early Tang-dynasty Chan (Zen) monks: the happy-go-lucky Hanshan, on the right, carries on his back a scroll of paper for writing poetry; his ever-present companion Shide is shown turning away from the viewer, with his head hidden by a large bamboo hat. As here, Shide is often depicted carrying a broom, reminding us that he served as a temple janitor. Both were based at Guoqingsi, a monastery on Mount Tiantai in present-day Zhejiang province. They are often depicted in both China and Japan with joyful expressions, even laughing uproariously, to represent their beloved eccentric personalities, but here Buson depicted Shide from behind, without revealing his face, and painted a subtle smile on Hanshan’s face. Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (February 23, 1646 - February 19, 1709) was the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty of Japan. He was the younger brother of Tokugawa Ietsuna, thus making him the son of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the grandson of Tokugawa Hidetada, and the great-grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He is known for instituting animal protection laws, particularly for dogs. This earned him the nickname of 'dog shogun'.

Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.
