Waking Up: A Girl of the Kōka Era (1844-1848) 1888 Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Japanese The series that made Yoshitoshi a noted artist was one of the most important Meiji series of ukiyo-e prints of beauties. The lady cleans her teeth with a split-bamboo toothbrush. Her cotton sleeping robe slips off one shoulder, and a few strands of her hair have come loose, suggesting that she is only half awake. The large morning-glory flowers, known as asagao (literally, "morning faces"), in the pot behind her on the right, are cleverly associated with the portrait. The excellence of the technique of this print is demonstrated in the fine lines representing the woman's hair, and reveals Yoshitoshi's genius for sensitive and sophisticated compositions.. A painting of Empress Jito from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (1162 - 1241). Empress Jito (645-702), was the 41st imperial ruler of Japan. Jito was daughter of Tenji Tenno, who was regent 661-68 and Emperor 668-71. Her husband and uncle, Temmu Tenno, had withdrawn to temple-life and left the throne to their son in 886 with her as regent and later successor. She made important administrative reforms, encouraged the development of agriculture and had the first silver coin struck. In 697 she abdicated in favour of her nephew (and grandson) Mommu, but she continued to hold power as a cloistered ruler, which became a persistent trend in Japanese politics, and she was the first to take the honorary title for past emperors - Dajo-Tenno.

Suzuki Kinsen was born in Wakayama in 1867 and studied 'Nan-ga' under Tsukushi Suiun. Since he could not get a job with Nan-ga painting, Kinsen studied ukiyo-e by himself, and drew many 'kuchi-e' (frontispiece illustrations) for kodanbon (book for story telling), and illustrations for Kobe newspapers. His illustrations were noted for their historical accuracy. It is said that the majority of illustrations for the kodanbon published in Osaka were by Kinsen.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - June 9, 1892), also named Taiso Yoshitoshi, was a Japanese artist. He is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese woodblock printing. He is additionally regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras - the last years of feudal Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in new things from the rest of the world, but over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many outstanding aspects of traditional Japanese culture, among them traditional woodblock printing.

Advertisement characteristic of 'old Shanghai' in the 1920-1940s, a trend started by American newspaperman Carl Crow who lived in Shanghai between 1911 and 1937, starting the first Western advertising agency in the city and creating much of what is thought of today as the 'sexy China Girl' poster and calendar advertisements. In today's more liberal China, these are making a comeback and are widely considered minor works of art characteristic of 'Old Shanghai'.
