Courtesan from the Myogaya House. Artist: Torii Kiyomasu I (Japanese, active 1696-1716). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 12 1/4 x 6 in. (31.1 x 15.2 cm). Date: ca. 1712.The subject of this print attributed to Torii Kiyomasu is a standing courtesan reading a poem slip. The inscription on the print, Komachi in the Yoshiwara District, refers to the famous Heian poetess, Ono no Komachi, and is thus an acknowledgement of the literary accomplishments of many Yoshiwara courtesans. The unfinished fragment, evoking the hope and the cyclical nature of spring, reads as follows: Life is full of trouble,but the plum blossoms by the window . The woman is tiny, but in her voluminous robes with their large-scale decoration of myoga (Japanese ginger), she boldly promotes her house while conveying an ageless grandeur that echoes the sentiment of the poem. Dekishima Hanya Seated on a Cherry Tree ca. 1700-05 Torii Kiyonobu I Japanese Dekishima Hanya was a very popular Kabuki actor of female roles in the beginning of the eighteenth century. Here we see him seated on a cherry tree with his kamon or family crest prominently displayed on his shoulder and hovering above him. Although he is not depicted in the guise of a female character here, he is wearing a lavish woman's kimono. In his day, young men wore women's clothes as a sign of their outre fashion. Following this trend, Dekishima wears an elegant woman's kimono with a floral and rabbit pattern. His right sleeve, however, has slipped off his shoulder to reveal an inner garment with the dynamic design of a large swooping hawk. Kiyonobu skilfully manipulated the images of the rabbit of the outer garment which drapes Dekishima's legs and the hawk on the sleeve of the inner garment to transform the figure's body into the arena of a predator's attack on its prey. Guanxiu’s paintings were already considered rare in 1757, when the Qianlong emperor encountered what he believed to be an authentic set in a monastery in Hangzhou. To preserve their appearance, the emperor commissioned copies and had them carved in stone so that rubbings like these could be made. According to one historical account: 'Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors'. She is believed to have fought and survived the Genpei War (1180-1185).

The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (Shi-ju-shichi-shi), also known as the Forty-seven Samurai, the Aki vendetta, or the Genroku Aki incident (Genroku aki jiken) took place in Japan at the start of the 18th century. One noted Japanese scholar described the tale as the country's 'national legend'. It recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushidi. The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Ki zuke no suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for two years to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves ordered to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder. Yang Guifei Playing a Flute 17th-18th century Kano Tsunenobu Japanese Academic painters in the Edo period also sought to represent beauties in their paintings, but drew on a continental figure painting tradition instead of using the demimond directly as their subject. Yang Guifei, ill-fated concubine of the Tang emperor at the time of the An Lushan rebellion and most likely first known through a poem by Bai Luodian (772-846), was a metaphor for womanly beauty from very early times. There are references to her in the eleventh-century Tale of Genji Genji Monogatari and in the slightly earlier Pillow Book Makura sōshi. By the seventeenth century, her perosnification of fleshly beauty was so pervasive it was used to sell skin-whitening cream, a product described in a short vignette in The Mirror of Townsmen in our Land Honcho chōnin kagami, a collection of merchant tales written by the novelist Saikaku (1642-1693) and published a year after his death..
