Science Helps Navigators On The Seas -- In present-day shipping equipment science is playing a great part in providing fool-proof equipment for navigational purposes. At the Sperry Gyroscope Company's works at Brentford, Middlesex, they are busy on gyro-compasses and gyro-pilots for the ship of the world's sea-faring nation. Already orders are being executed for Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Portugal. The Gyro-compass derives its North-seeking qualities from a combination of four natural laws, the first and second of which are properties of the gyroscope, the third gravitation, and the fourth the earth's rotation. Britain's Atomic Pile Helps In Battle Against Disease - Preparing radioactive gold in colloidal solution for cancer treatment, at the Harwell station. The operator wears protective clothing and gloves and is guarded from radiation by interlocking lead bricks.Britain revealed that she may have Ships driven by atomic energy within less than ten years when, following a two-year-lapse, she unveiled a few more of her atom secrets in a press visit to the Atomic Research Station at Harewell, Berkshire.Sir John Cockcroft, Director of the Establishment, disclosed that Britain's scientists are studying the feasibility of using atomic energy to drive ships, including submarines. Blood Drying Unit- Processing Blood in the Laboratory, Cambridge, England, UK, 1943 At the blood drying unit at Cambridge University, crude plasma is syphoned off the kaolin deposit with which it had been mixed to prevent clotting, by a member of staff. The plasma is then transferred into a large flask. The laboratory worker wears a lab coat and special mask to prevent contamination of the plasma.

British Contributions To Tropical Health -- As the effect on the liver is of great importance in may tropical diseases, the physiology workers at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine are studying this in great detail. Here, Dr. W. H. Andrews (left) and his assistant Mrs. Yvonne Cane are setting up the apparatus which he has designed for experiments on the effect of the anemia caused by malaria in the liver. The chemical effects of the disease are reproduced artificially by feeding various gases into the blood stream (the controls are on the right), and results are recorded by delicate apparatus on the left, which Dr. Andrews is here adjusting. International Research On Use of Tin: Laboratories in Britain Serve The World -- Miss Norma Young places a sample in an electrolytic cell used by the Tin Research Institute for the investigation of electro-Tinplate. The sample goes in the small box in the circulatory system round which electrolyte is pumped at the same speed at which Tin plate is moved through stationary electrolyte in normal mass-production plants.
