To explore bed of AtlanticLeft to right, Mr, R.I.B. Cooper and Mr.B,C. Browne holding the camera-releases which start the Vening Meinesz apparatus, when testing their scientific instruments at Cambridge. Mr. B.C. Browne and Mr. R.I.B. Cooper of the department of. Geo physics at Cambridge university, England, and Dr, Nieuwenkamp of the dutch geodetic institution are to spend four weeks in a submarine exploring the bed of this Atlantic. With the specially constructed instruments the scientists may not only solve the riddle whether Atlantic, the sunken continent , even existed but also test the Wegener theory the continents gradually drift apart. They also expect to discover whether the ocean bed is made of the same material as the land continents. included in the apparatus the vening Menesz submarine pendulum which Is so delicate that camera-releases are used for starting it. This scientific voyage may be the forerunner of a new Era of prospecting for under-sea oil wells. July 29, 1946
