Mercury and Battus Francisque Millet French The story of the old shepherd Battus, who, having witnessed Mercury's theft of a herd of cattle, promised not to disclose the secret, is recounted in Ovids Metamorphoses (II: 668 ff.). When tested by the god, shown here in the guise of a young shepherd, he pointed to the foot of the mountain where the cattle were hidden. Mercury then turned him into a stone. Date: 1674.This highly pictorial drawing, along with a sketchier one depicting the same scene (Lehman Collection, 1975.1.661), are part of a group associated with one of Claude's most celebrated paintings from the last phase of his long artistic career (Holkham Hall, Norfolk, England). The painting, which bears the same title and date as the drawing, was executed in 1674 for Camillo Massimi (1620-1676), who became a major patron of the arts after being elevated to the position of Cardinal by pope Clement X in 1670. The Whale-oil Refinery near the Village of Smerenburg.Smerenburg on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen was a settlement of Dutch whalers. The painter was never there, but constructed a hotchpotch of drawn and painted motifs that he knew. On the beach whale blubber is being carved into small pieces and boiled. The rendered fat was poured into wooden trays, purified, and the resulting oil stored in barrels. The mens barracks can be seen in the right background.

Bullfight in a Divided Ring Attributed to Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish Goya treated the theme of bullfighting in a number of paintings, in a celebrated series of printsthe Tauromaquia, published in 1816and in four lithographs published in Bordeaux in 1825 when he was in exile. During the mid-nineteenth century there was a brisk business in copies of Goya's popular bullfight compositions, and the use here of certain motifs that appear in Goya's other bullfight scenes has led some authorities to view our painting as a pastiche by another hand. For nineteenth-century Americans, who understood the American landscape to be unmarked by traces of past civilizations, the ancient ruins of Europe were objects of fascination and contemplation. With the American tourist in mind, John Linton Chapman produced numerous versions of this painting of the Via Appia, the ancient roadway outside Rome that is lined with the ruins of tombs.
