The Pont Neuf 1849-50 Johan Barthold Jongkind Dutch This view is based on drawings (Musée du Louvre, Paris) that Jongkind made along the Seine in 1849, the year he began to paint scenes of Paris. He took liberties with the prospect by reducing the number of the bridges arches from five to four, eliminating the Place Dauphine, and making Notre-Dame Cathedral appear closer than it is from this vantage point on the rivers left bank. These alterations, together with the dramatic sky and open brushwork, amount to a composition very much in the manner of Jongkinds mentor, the Romantic marine painter Eugène Isabey (1803-1886).. Alexander at the Tomb of Cyrus the Great 1796 France. This landscape and its companion piece, Mount Athos Carved as a Monument to Alexander the Great, reflect the late-18th-century enthusiasm for the antique, as well as the cult of sensibility that made the tomb in a landscape a favored subject for art in this period. Here Alexander, who overthrew the Persian Empire, arrives at the tomb of its founder, Cyrus the Great (590/580ñc. 529 B.C.), only to find that it has been desecrated. In choosing the subjects of this pair of moralizing landscapes, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes was doubtless suggesting the transitory nature of empire and of life itself.. Oil on canvas . The Cascade ca. 1775 Jean Honoré Fragonard French In 1756, having won the Prix de Rome, Fragonard departed for four years at the French academy in that city, a traditional rite of artistic passage. Practically nothing is known of his journey from Paris, but on the return trip he traveled by way of Florence to Venice, west to Marseilles, and north through Lyons. He visited the principal cities of Italy again in 1774, as well as Vienna and Frankfurt. This painting is most likely an imagined conglomeration of the kinds of gardens, architecture, and sculpture he encountered.. The Cascade. Two Men Contemplating the Moon. Artist: Caspar David Friedrich (German, Greifswald 1774-1840 Dresden). Dimensions: 13 3/4 x 17 1/4 in. (34.9 x 43.8 cm). Date: ca. 1825-30.These two figures are seen from behind so that the viewer may participate in their communion with nature. They have been identified as Friedrich, at right, and his friend and disciple August Heinrich (1794-1822). Fascination with the moon ran high among the German Romantics, who regarded the motif as an object of pious contemplation. This is the third version of one of Friedrich's most famous compositions, of which the first was painted during Heinrich's lifetime (1819; Gemäldegalerie, Dresden) and the second soon after his death (ca. 1824; Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin).
