Mount Athos Carved as a Monument to Alexander the Great 1796 France. Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, a leading landscape artist in late-18th-century France, sought to elevate the art of landscape to the level of history painting. In the hierarchy of subjects set by the French artistic establishment, the painting of inspiring religious and historical narratives was placed higher than the imitation of nature. Valenciennes followed the 17th-century precedent of Nicolas Poussin by imbuing his landscapes with moral content. This work and its companion, Alexander at the Tomb of Cyrus the Great, address questions of fame and mortality through episodes from the life of Alexander the Great (356ñ323 B.C.). Here Valenciennes depicted an unrealized project to perpetuate Alexanderís gloryóa monumental image of the ruler carved into Mount Athos.. Oil on canvas . Pierre Henri de Valenciennes

Conflagration of the Masonic Hall, Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1819 Philadelphia. On March 9, 1819, Masonic Hall, built just 8 years earlier, burned to the ground. A Philadelphia publisher commissioned artists Samuel Jones and John Lewis Krimmel to create a composition of the fireís devastation for distribution as a print (etched by John Hill). Circulation of such sensational events was an early 19th-century means of broadcasting news, expanding the reach of fine arts, and making a profit. Jones painted this work, which served as a study for the print. Krimmel, the nationís first great genre painter, was hired to refine and amplify the figural scene in the foreground. As the printís composition reveals significant changes to the figures, it is unknown if Krimmel executed any of the figures here, or if he developed his designs wholly apart from this painting.. Oil on mahogany panel . Samuel Jones

Northeaster 1895; reworked by 1901 Winslow Homer American On the Maine coast, a nor’easter” is a storm of exceptional violence and duration. When Homer first showed this canvas in 1895, it included two men in foul-weather gear crouching on the rocks below a smaller column of spray. Even though the painting was well received and purchased by a leading collector of American art—George Hearn, who later donated it to the Metropolitan Museum—Homer reworked it to powerful effect. The Last Days of Pompeii James Hamilton (American, 1819-1878). The Last Days of Pompeii, 1864. Oil on canvas, 59 15/16 x 48 1/16 in. (152.2 x 122 cm). The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. and subsequent devastation of Pompeii (in present-day Italy) was a popular and fascinating narrative in the mid-eighteenth century, particularly among Romantic painters on both sides of the Atlantic. At that time the volcano began a sustained period of renewed activity. Simultaneously, archaeologists began excavations of the ancient buried city. This cataclysmic theme, which lends itself to ruminations on the cyclical nature of societies and civilizations, continued to appeal to artists in the mid-nineteenth century. American Art 1864

Figures from a Crèche, 1780-1830. Italy, Naples, late 18th-early 19th century. Painted wood and terracotta with various textiles; The practice of creating scenes of the Nativity for the home dates from the early 1700s in Italy, where people began to set up doll-like figures of about a foot or less in height. The custom was particularly popular in Naples around 1800, where crèche scenes (crèche means cradle, or crib) included many figures, whose heads and hands of painted terracotta, stuffed cloth bodies, and clothing adapted from contemporary local costumes gave them an amazingly realistic character. Representations of the birth of Jesus can be traced to the first few centuries of Christianity. Both living creatures and sculptural depictions of them were used from early times. By the late middle ages it was customary to create life-size figures of wood or stone, naturalistically painted, to represent the characters who participated in the events of Jesus's early life. These sculptures
