Hanging (Arid) ca. 1800 One of the rarest and finest examples of Moroccan embroidery, this wall hanging (arid) displays the most remarkable achievement of a Chefchaouene needlewoman's skills. The arids were used to cover the surrounding areas of interior arches in matching sets. Worked in plaited stitch, these panels contain geometric motifs based on tracery, arabesques, stars, rectangles, and diamonds, all closely associated with Andalusian tilework, woodcarving, and early textiles. Said to have been used as an altar curtain in a Nestorian church in Jerusalem, this particular piece is certainly conversant with a variety of cultures and civilizations. The importance of embroidery in Moroccan life can be illustrated by the ceremony held for every infant girl at the age of four months, when the baby was placed in a chair and given a needle and thimble along with some silk thread to hold, in anticipation of a life blessed with the needle's art.. Hilt of a Ritual or Votive Sword possibly 15th-16th century Tibetan Intended for a ritual or votive sword, this hilt appears to be unique, particularly for its large proportions and its iconography. At the base of the hilt there is a lion-like head called a kirtimukha, which was widely used as a symbol of watchfulness, protection, and good fortune. (30.96 × 152.08 cm), Brocaded silk, Japan, 19th century, Varicolored dragons and phoenixes cavort among a plethora of flowers on this silk brocade stole made for a Buddhist monk. Known as ōhi in Japanese, such stoles are placed on the right shoulders of monks when wearing a particular variety of outer robe (kesa) formed from seven individual pieces of fabric.

The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century.

Sacred Names of Shinto Deities and the "Oracles of the Three Shrines" 1805 Mokujiki Shnin The term mingei, generally translated as “folk art,” is often applied to the works of Mokujiki Shnin, an itinerant priest and amateur artist who sculpted rough-hewn Buddhist deities and gods of good fortune. However, he was also a calligrapher, and his brush writing exhibits the same energy and heartfelt piety that appear in his sculptural works. Here, he inscribed the names of Shinto kami regarded as local manifestations of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, followed by the “Oracles of the Three Shrines” (Sansha takusen). The scroll is an example of calligraphic works that became devotional objects for people unable to travel to the great Shinto shrines of Ise, in Mie Prefecture; Iwashimizu Hachimang, in Kyoto; and Kasuga, in Nara.. Khara-Khoto is a medieval Tangut city in the Ejin khoshuu of Alxa League, in western Inner Mongolia, near the former Gashun Lake. It has been identified as the city of Etzina, which appears in The Travels of Marco Polo.

The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. The donkey-riding monk at right, Yushanzhu (whose name means Master of Mount Yu), was said to have achieved enlightenment as he fell while riding his donkey across a bridge. Zheng Huangniu (Zheng of the Yellow Ox) reads Buddhist scripture while riding his ox backwardsan indication of his detachment from the workaday world. This pairing of otherwise unrelated Chinese monks can be traced back to a beloved Chinese painting from the early 1200s that in the 1600s was owned by Japan’s ruling family, the Tokugawa, for whom Kano Dōun served as a painter-in-attendance for most of his career.
