Opportunity Passes 10-Kilometer Mark

High-albedo marks on the lunar surface left by a boulder bouncing down the northeast wall of farside highlands crater Moore F in this image captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

This image was obtained by NASA's Dawn spacecraft on July 3, 2018 from an altitude of about 30 miles (48 kilometers). The center of this picture is located at about 20.2 degrees north latitude and 240.8 degrees east longitude.

This image captured by NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft shows just one example of the bright and dark markings that appear during summer time. The marks are related to the polar layers.

Tantalus Fossae is a set of long valleys on the eastern side of Alba Patera. These valleys are referred to as grabens and are formed by extension of the crust and faulting.

These images, taken on February 19, 1997 by NASA's Galileo orbiter, show two of the three long-lived White Ovals that formed to the south of the Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

$This image contains a portion of Aureum Chaos located just south of the Martian equator. This fractured landscape contains canyons and mesas with two large impact craters in the upper left.$

Satellite Rings Movie

This color image of the sun, Earth and Venus was taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft Feb. 14, 1990, when it was approximately 32 degrees above the plane of the ecliptic and at a slant-range distance of approximately 4 billion miles.

This VIS image is located near the south polar cap and exhibits the same layering of ice and dust. Outliers are regions that were once part of a larger regional feature but over the course of time processes have isolated them from the main feature. New plume vent near Zamama, Io

While yesterday's image showed a texture of oval depressions (swiss cheese), this image from NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft shows a linear surface texture of the south polar cap. This texture is described as looking like a thumbprint.

This image is one of seven from the narrow-angle camera on NASA's Cassini spacecraft assembled as a brief movie of high-altitude cloud movements on Jupiter. It was taken in early October 2000.

NASA's Opportunity had driven 62.5 meters (205 feet) that sol, southward away from an outcrop called 'Penrhyn,' which the rover had been examining for a few sols, and toward a crater called 'Adventure.' This is a vertical projection.

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover imaged these drifting clouds on May 17, 2019, the 2,410th Martian day, or sol, of the mission, using its black-and-white Navigation Cameras (Navcams). These are likely water-ice clouds about 19 miles (31 kilometers) above the surface. They are also noctilucent clouds, meaning they are so high that they are still illuminated by the Sun, even when it's night at Mars' surface. Scientists can watch when light leaves the clouds and use this information to infer their altitude. Movie available at

NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured a propeller-shaped disturbance in one of Saturn's rings created by a moon that is too small to be seen here. The moon is invisible at the center of the image.

Mapping Titan's Surface

This view of the damaged Apollo 13 Service Module (SM) was photographed from the Lunar Module/Command Module following SM jettisoning. As seen here, an entire panel on the SM was blown away by the apparent explosion of oxygen tank number two located in Sector 4 of the SM. Two of the three fuel cells are visible just forward (above) the heavily damaged area. Three fuel cells, two oxygen tanks, and two hydrogen tanks are locate in Sector 4. The damaged area is located above the S-band high gain antenna. Nearest the camera is the Service Propulsion System (SPS) engine and nozzle. The damage to the SM caused the Apollo 13 crewmen to use the Lunar Module (LM) as a lifeboat . The LM was jettisoned just prior to Earth reentry by the Command Module.

Lunar rainbow, 1844. Rainbow produced by moonlight rather than direct sunlight: '...this rare phenomenon was witnessed by a correspondent at Highfield House, Lenton, Nottinghamshire...At 7 h. 58 m. Busy at the Bottom of 'Endurance Crater' (vertical)

This March 20, 2014, image from the MARCI camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has a dark spot (at center of rectangle) noticed while the image was being examined for a weather report.

This frame from an animation shows the movement of several dust storms near NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander. These images were taken by the lander's Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) on the 137th Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Oct. 13, 2008).

This image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was obtained on October 30, 2014 by the OSIRIS scientific imaging system on the Rosetta spacecraft. The saturation of the image allows the viewer to see some surface structures on 'dark side' of the comet.

This imagery is being released in association with NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission. This is a temporary caption to be replaced as soon as more information is available.

This animated GIF was generated using imagery acquired by the navigation camera aboard NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during its 25th flight on April 18, 2022. Covering a distance of 2,310 feet (704 meters) and at a speed of 12 mph (5.5 meters per second), it was the Red Planet rotorcraft's longest and fastest flight to date. The first frame of the clip shows the view about one second into the flight. After reaching an altitude of 33 feet (10 meters), the helicopter heads southwest, accelerating to its maximum speed in less than three seconds. Ingenuity first flies over a group of sand ripples then, about halfway through the video, several rock fields. Finally, relatively flat and featureless terrain appears below, making a good landing spot. The video of the 161.3-second flight was speeded up approximately five times, reducing it to less than 35 seconds. Ingenuity's navigation camera has been programmed to deactivate whenever the rotorcraft is within 3 feet (1 meter) of the surface.

. Ingenuity Before Flight 52's Landing. NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter's navigation camera captured the rotorcraft in shadow during its 52nd flight on April 26, 2023. This image was finally received after Perseverance and Ingenuity were out of communication for 63 days.

This image was obtained by NASA's Dawn spacecraft on July 3, 2018 from an altitude of about 26 miles (42 kilometers). The center of this picture is located at about 16.5 degrees north latitude and 241.2 degrees east longitude.

On Sept. 28, 2017, Manaro Voui volcano on Ambae island in Vanuatu began spewing ash in a moderate eruption, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of all 11,000 residents. This nighttime thermal infrared image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), acquired on Oct. 7, shows a hot spot (white) on the volcano's summit crater, but no large eruption. Cold clouds are dark gray, the warmer island is gray, and the ocean, (warmer than the island), is light gray. The image covers an area of 17 by 26 miles (27 by 42.4 kilometers), and is centered at 15.4 degrees south, 167.8 degrees east.
