Date: ca. 1481-82.This charming Madonna and Child employs some of the same pictorial devices used by Vittore's brother Carlo, building up the gold to create three-dimensional embellishments. The parapet is inscribed with Vittore's name and on it are placed a carnation (emblem of love), cherries (like the apple, symbol of original sin), and a devotional book. She is holding the infant Jesus with her right arm. In the distance is seen a tower, from which the picturwe takes its name. It now hangs in London's National Gallery.

Madonna and Child. Artist: Master of the Magdalen (Italian, Florence, active 1265-95). Dimensions: Irregular, 29 1/2 x 18 1/4 in. (74.9 x 46.4 cm). Date: ca. 1280.Painted in the 1280s, this head is a fragment of a large painting of the Madonna and Child (whose blessing hand and knee can be seen). The artist was a close follower of Cimabue, the principal painter in Florence before Giotto. Virgin and Child in a niche ca. 1460 Luca della Robbia Italian One of the most distinguished sculptors of the early Renaissance, Luca della Robbia created famous works in marble, such as the Cantoria (Singing Choir) for the organ loft of Florence Cathedral, and in bronze, such as the doors of the North Sacristy of the same church. His name is, however, most closely identified— and indeed nearly synonymous with— sculpture in tin-glazed terracotta. In this medium he specialized in images of the Madonna and Child, particularly for private devotions, and began a practice of reproducing them in casts, which members of his family and large workshop continued into the sixteenth century.The Bliss Madonna, a glazed terracotta known in one other example (see below), is a quintessential Luca della Robbia work.
