Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist, mid 14th century. Tempera and tooled gold on panel, 77 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (196.9 x 100.3 cm). In 1348, the bubonic plague killed more than half the population of Florence, causing profound social, economic, and psychic devastation. In the plagues aftermath Nardo di Cione painted this large altarpiece, likely for the Duomo, the most important church in the city. There is a red and white banner near Jesus, who holds a bird in his hand; both are symbols of the Resurrection, his future triumph over death. For devout Christian survivors of the pandemic, this would have been a powerful image of salvation. The Duomo housed the relics of two of the saints depicted here: Zenobius (upper left), the first Bishop of Florence, and the city

The Annunciation ca. 1435 Sassetta (Stefano di Giovanni) Italian The vase of lilies, prominently placed between the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin in this Annunciation scene, symbolizes both the Virgins purity as well as Christs Incarnation. The panel was originally part of the highly celebrated altarpiece that Sassetta, the renowned Sienese artist, painted between 1437 and 1444 for the Franciscan church of Borgo San Sepolcro in Arezzo. The Annunciation formed the central pinnacle on the back side of this multi-paneled, double-sided altarpiece. Madonna of Humility Lorenzo Monaco (Italian, School of Florence, ca. 1370/71-1424). , ca. 1415-1420. Tempera and tooled gold on panel with engaged frame, 33 1/4 x 18 7/8 in. (84.5 x 47.9 cm). According to medieval theology, humility was the source of all virtues, an appropriate metaphor for Mary as the Mother of God. In Lorenzo Monacos devotional painting Mary is depicted as the Madonna of Humility, seated not on a throne but on a cushion resting on a marble pavement. Mary Magdalena by Carlo Crivelli (c. 1430-1495), Ascoll Piceno, ca. 1480, tempera on panel. With Carlo Crivelli, the so-called International Gothic style experienced its final flowering in Italy. This perfectly preserved panel was painted towards the end of his career. It served as the altarpiece of a provincial church dedicated to the Magdalene. Crivellis refined style is apparent here in the overly elegant arrangement of the hands and fingers and in the saints face.

Panels from the High Altar of the Charterhouse of Saint-Honoré, Thuison-les-Abbeville Virgin and Child 1490-1500 France. This panel was once part of the altarpiece decorating the high altar of the Carthusian monastery at Thuison, outside of Abbeville in northern France. Four saints standing in niches were painted on the exterior of the altarpieceís wings. When the wings were open, the interior of the altarpiece told the story of Christís Passion and Resurrection through painted narratives on the inside of the wings and painted and gilded carvings in the central shrine whose central subject was undoubtedly the Crucifixion. The carvings have not survived. The fronts and backs of the wings were sawn apart in the mid 19th century; all the wing panels except one narrative (The Entry into Jerusalem, Hermitage, Saint Petersburg) are in the Art Institute.A rich border region north of Paris, Picardy was a possession of the Burgundian Netherlands in the mid-15th century, becoming part of France
