Seascape with Open Sky, 1860. Eugène Boudin (French, 1824-1898). Pastel on gray wove paper mounted on thin paperboard; image and sheet: 21.5 x 28.7 cm (8 7/16 x 11 5/16 in.). Eugène Boudin is best known for inspiring Impressionist artists, especially a young Claude Monet, to paint outdoors. This drawing belongs to a series that Boudin made throughout much of his career depicting seascapes with dramatic skylines onsite. He favored pastel, the powdery medium used here, for its portability and directness, allowing him to capture the dramatic effects of nature as they shifted.

Le Pouliguen: Fishing Boats. Artist: Paul Signac (French, Paris 1863-1935 Paris). Dimensions: 10 13/16 x 17 1/16 in. (27.5 x 43.3 cm). Date: 1928.Although Paul Signac never abandoned Neo-Impressionist principles, he found that watercolor painting offered a welcome alternative to the labored application of the Neo-Impressionist technique. Especially in later years, spent sailing the waters of coastal France, Signac discovered that a pencil and a box of watercolors were sufficient tools to record the dazzling harbors along the way. The fishing port Le Pouliguen, on the southern coast of Brittany, is the subject of several watercolors made in August 1828, when Signac was a guest of the art collector Gaston Lévy in nearby La Baule. Fishing Boats, Le Pouliguen, loosely painted in colors offset by the white of the paper, subsequently figured in Signac's Ports of France series. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Sea near Katwijk. In 1885 Toorop was living in Brussels, where he was a member of the artists circle called Les Vingt (the 20). He was exposed there to the work of Gustave Courbet (on view in this gallery), who often painted with a palette knife. Two years later, Toorop made this sea-scape, also using a palette knife in places. The effect is realistic; however when seen close up, it features an incredible mixture of colours.

Here, Eugène Louis Boudin depicted local workers in a horse-drawn cart crossing a beach that, at other times, was filled with fashionable urban tourists. He was committed to working en plein air (outdoors) to capture with freshness and immediacy the play of light on water and clouds in patches of color. This approach had a profound influence on his younger friend Claude Monet, who recalled: One day Boudin said to me: ‘Learn to draw well and appreciate the sea, the light, the blue sky.’ I took his advice and together we went on long outings during which I painted constantly from nature. This was how I came to understand nature and learned to love it passionately.. White Ships John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). White Ships, 1908. Translucent and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, 13 7/8 x 19 3/8 in. (35.2 x 49.2 cm). In this work, one of the latest of the watercolors in the 1909 purchase, Sargent used a small amount of clear wax on the right side of the larger boat in order to repel the blue washes and create highlights. This is the only watercolor in the collection from the 1909 purchase in which wax resist is found. Sargents use of this technique later increased significantly; most of Bostons watercolors purchased in 1912 contain wax. American Art 1908
