This painting is of the old woodenBattersea Bridgeacross theRiver Thamesbefore it was replaced by the modern bridge.Chelsea Old Churchto the left (on the north bank of the river) and the then recently builtAlbert Bridgeto the right, with fireworks above, can be seen in the distance. The picture is an evening view and is full of atmospheric effect. The bridge is painted taller than it actually was for added effect. The acclaimed American, but British-based, painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler (18341903) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He saw a parallel between painting and music. Among his best-known works are Whistler's Mother, Thomas Carlyle, Arrangement in Pink Red and Purple, and Mother of Pearl and Silver: The Andalusian.

At the Seaside. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 20 x 34 in. (50.8 x 86.4 cm). Date: ca. 1892.Beginning in 1891 Chase taught at a summer art school in Shinnecock, Long Island. The following year, he and his family moved into their new summer home, Shinnecock Hall, which had been designed and built by the well-known firm of McKim, Mead and White. Chase taught at the beach resort until 1902, conducting open-air classes for as many as a hundred students each summer. This work is characteristic of the outdoor scenes that Chase painted during the 1890s on Long Island beaches. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

At the Seaside ca. 1892 William Merritt Chase American From 1891 to 1902, Chase served as the director of the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art in the town of Southampton, on Long Island, New York. Chase taught two days each week and spent the rest of his time painting and enjoying the company of his family. In this canvas, women and children take their ease on a beach, probably along Shinnecock Bay. A perfect site for genteel leisure on a perfect day, Chases rendering is capped by a broad expanse of sky that fills the upper half of the canvas. Date: 1869.During the summer of 1869, Monet and Renoir set up their easels at La Grenouillère, a boating and bathing resort on the Seine River, not far from Paris. Monet noted on September 25, "I do have a dream, a painting, the baths of La Grenouillère, for which I have made some bad sketches, but it is only a dream. Renoir, who has just spent two months here, also wants to do this painting." He painted six views of the seaport and its surrounding countryside. His intention was 'to translate as exactly as possible the luminosity of the open air, with all its nuances.' Although Seurat shared the Impressionists' goal of translating nature's light and color, he also wished to make Impressionism more precise. He wanted to replace its spontaneous, improvisational qualities with a more systematic, objective approach that could reflect the essential structures of a landscape, not just its transitory effects. To this end, Seurat developed an unusual new technique, variously called pointillism, divisionism, or Neo-Impressionism. He juxtaposed small dots of pigment according to his interpretati
