Range 4.8 million km. ( 3 million miles ) P-34648 This Voyager 2, sixty-one second exposure, shot through clear filters, of Neptunes rings. The Voyager cameras were programmed to make a systematic search of the entire ring system for new material. The previously ring arc is visible as a long bright streak at the bottom of the image. Extening beyond the bright arc is a much fainter component which follows the arc in its orbit. this faint material was also visible leading the ring arc and, in total, covers at least half of the orbit before it becomes too faint to identify. Also visible in this image, is a continuous ring of faint material previously identified as a possible ring arc by Voyager. this continuous ring is located just outside the orbit of the moon 1989N3, which was also discovered by Voyager. This moon is visible as a streak in the lower left. the smear of 1989N3 is due to its own orbital motion during the exposure. Extreme computer processing of this image was made to enhan

The dunes in this daytime IR image from NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft appear bright because they are warmer than the surrounding crater materials. These dunes are located on the floor of Proctor Crater.
6145-45262258
This VIS image of Olympia Undae was collected during north polar spring. The crests of the dunes and other surfaces are light colored, indicative of a frost covering. At the top right of the image is a region of smooth surfaces. This is the ejecta from Jojutla Crater. The ejecta is a higher elevation than the rest of the surface, and dunes are climbing or skirting the ejecta regions. The density of dunes and the alignments of the dune crests varies with location, controlled by the amount of available sand and the predominant winds over time, and, in this case, the presence of different surface elevations. As the season changes into summertime, the dune crests will lose the frost and reveal the darker sand beneath. This loss of frost is just starting to be visible at the bottom of the image. Olympia Undae is a vast dune field in the north polar region of Mars. It consists of a broad sand sea or erg that partly rings the north polar cap from about 120° to 240°E longitude and 78° to 83°N

During its final targeted flyby of Titan on April 22, 2017, Cassini's radar mapper got the mission's last close look at the moon's surface. On this 127th targeted pass by Titan (unintuitively named T-126 ), the radar was used to take two images of the surface, shown at left and right. Both images are about 200 miles (300 kilometers) in width, from top to bottom. Objects appear bright when they are tilted toward the spacecraft or have rough surfaces; smooth areas appear dark. At left are the same bright, hilly terrains and darker plains that Cassini imaged during its first radar pass of Titan, in 2004. Scientists do not see obvious evidence of changes in this terrain over the 13 years since the original observation. At right, the radar looked once more for Titan's mysterious magic island (PIA20021) in a portion of one of the large hydrocarbon seas, Ligeia Mare. No island feature was observed during this pass. Scientists continue to work on what the transient feature might have been, wit

Range 4.7 million km (2.9 million mi.) Nereid, the last satellite of Neptune to be discovered before Voyager's recent discoveries, was first seen by Gerard Kuiper in 1949. Until this Voyager 2 image was obtained, all that was known about Nereid was its orbital parameters and intrinsic brightness. With a resolution of 43 kilometers (26.6 mi.) per pixel, this image has sufficient detail to show the overall size and albedo. Nereid is about 170 km (105 mi.) across and reflects about 12 percent of the incident light.

This VIS image of Olympia Undae was collected early in north polar spring. The crests of the dunes are light colored, indicative of a frost covering. As the season changes into summertime, the dune crests will lose the frost and reveal the darker sand beneath. The linear nature of transverse dunes can be seen at the bottom of the image. The density of dunes and the alignments of the dune crests varies with location, controlled by the amount of available sand and the predominant winds over time. Olympia Undae is a vast dune field in the north polar region of Mars. It consists of a broad sand sea or erg that partly rings the north polar cap from about 120° to 240°E longitude and 78° to 83°N latitude. The dune field covers an area of approximately 470,000 km2 (bigger than California, smaller than Texas). Olympia Undae is the largest continuous dune field on Mars. Olympia Undae is not the only dune field near the north polar cap, several other smaller fields exist in the same latitude, but

AS12-57-8455 (19-20 Nov. 1969) --- An Apollo 12 stereo view showing a three-inch square of the lunar surface. The exposure was made with an Apollo 35mm stereo close-up camera during extravehicular activity of the Apollo 12 lunar landing mission. The camera was developed to get the highest possible resolution of a small area. The three-inch square is photographed with a flash illumination and at a fixed distance. The camera is mounted on a walking stick, and the astronauts use it by holding it up against the object to be photographed and pulling the trigger. Astronauts Charles Conrad Jr., commander, and Alan L. Bean, lunar module pilot, descended in the Apollo 12 Lunar Module to explore the moon while astronaut Richard F. Gordon Jr. remained with the Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit in the capacity of command module pilot.

These are the highest-resolution color images of any part of Saturn's rings, to date, showing a portion of the inner-central part of the planet's B Ring. The view is a mosaic of two images that show a region that lies between 61,300 and 65,600 miles (98,600 and 105,500 kilometers) from Saturn's center. This image is a natural color composite, created using images taken with red, green and blue spectral filters. The pale tan color is generally not perceptible with the naked eye in telescope views, especially given that Saturn has a similar hue. The material responsible for bestowing this color on the rings -- which are mostly water ice and would otherwise appear white -- is a matter of intense debate among ring scientists that will hopefully be settled by new in-situ observations before the end of Cassini's mission. The different ringlets seen here are part of what is called the irregular structure of the B ring. Cassini radio occultations of the rings have shown that these features hav

It was made 45 hours before the closest approach to Neptune. the image shows feathery white clouds that overlie the boundary of the dark and light blue regions. the pinwheel ( spiral ) structure of both the dark boundary and the white cirrus suggest a storm system rotating counterclockwise. Periodic, small-scale patterns in the white clouds, possibly waves, are short-lived and do not persist from one Neptunian rotation to the next. This color composite was made from the clear and green filter images.

P-34675 Range 5.9 million km. ( 3.6 million miles ) Orbital Speed 40,000 km/hr. or 25,000 mi/hr. The most recently discovered satellites of Neptune, 1989N5 and 1989N6, are shown in this Voyager 2 image. Their high orbital speed, in combination with the a 15 sec. exposure, has caused faint streaks. 1989N3 was discovered in early August, 1989. 1989N6 is distinguished by an orbit that is inclined 4.5 degrees to Neptune's equatorial plane, the only new satellite in the Neptune system to have noticably inclined orbit. 1989N5 cicles Neptune every 7.5 hours at a ditance of 25,000 km. or 15,500 miles above the cloud tops. 1989N6 orbits Neptune 23,00 km. or 14,000 miles from cloud tops every 7.1 hours

jsc2020e030484 (4/20/2020) --- A preflight image sequence from terrestrial experiments with two vertically oriented ratchet surfaces; subcooling: 9.5 ; heat flux: 1.31 W/cm2. Asymmetric Sawtooth and Cavity-Enhanced Nucleation-Driven Transport (PFMI-ASCENT) demonstrates a passive cooling system for electronic devices in microgravity using a microstructured surface. When fluids boil over flat heated surfaces in microgravity, vapor bubbles grow larger in size, causing poor heat transfer that can lead to damage of devices. Adding microscopic rachets on the surface may passively enable mobility of vapor bubbles and prevent this damage.(Image courtesy of: Techshot, Inc.)

STS071-745-006 (27 June-7 July 1995) --- This view shows a ship track, probably in the northern Pacific Ocean, where a ship has caused clouds to form more thickly directly above the path of this ship. This track is therefore visible even though the ship itself is not. Ship tracks are thought to be caused by particles thrown up into the air by the ship, from smokestack emissions and from water particles generated by the ship moving through the sea. Under favorable weather conditions, water condenses around these particles to form clouds, in this case thicker "popcorn" clouds than already exists in the area. Ongoing studies are attempting to understand this phenomenon better.

Reportage at the Neuroimaging research centre in Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, France. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) platform. MEG detects variations in the brain's magnetic field during various types of cerebral activity. It studies normal and abnormal brain function. Recording the magnetic field produced by neuronal currents requires ultra sensitive sensors called SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device). The 306 sensors spread over 102 areas allow both near and far magnetic fields to be measured, and the brain's deep structures to be 'seen'. Results of a MEG carried out on a healthy patient receiving visual stimulation. The curves at bottom left show magnetic fields both before and during visual stimulation. The right-hand image combines an MRI scan with the MEG. The active areas of the brain during stimulation can be seen (red line). The top left-hand image shows the brain's magnetic flux.
