He was also the inventor of the commemorative portrait medal. Inspired by Roman coins, with their portraits of rulers and allegorical representations on the reverse, the medals commemorated individuals or events and functioned as gifts and mementoes. Vittorino Rambaldoni da Feltre was a celebrated humanist and teacher whom the marquess of Mantua, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, engaged to educate his children. Ludovico Gonzaga, a former student, probably commissioned the medal to honor his beloved teacher around the time of Vittorinos death. On the medals reverse is a bird feeding its young. This medal was struck in 1749 to commemorate the wars conclusion with the treaty signed in 1748 at Aix-la-Chapelle [Aachen. Perhaps to evoke Aix-la-Chapelles ancient status as Europes first capital under the Holy Roman Empire, the French king, Louis XV (b. 1710; r. 1715-74), is portrayed wearing a ribbon fillet in emulation of portraits of the Roman emperors on classical coinage. Allusions to imperial numismatic traditions continue on the medals reverse. The female personification of enthroned Peace is similar to representations of the enthroned goddess Salus on the reverses of Roman coins. The medals inscription, SALUS GENERIS HUMANI recalls the goddesss name and role as guardian of the Roman peoples well-being.Peace is surrounded bCommemoration of Marie-Antoinette: Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette obverse.
