Artist: Costanzo da Ferrara (Italian, Venice ca. 1450-after 1524 Naples ()). Dimensions: Diam. 11.5 cm, wt. 450.64 g.. Date: model 1481 (old aftercast).Costanzo da Ferrara was both a painter and a medalist who was primarily active in Naples. Costanzo was called to Istanbul to paint a portrait of the Sultan Mehmed II of Turkey (1430-1481) probably between 1475-1478 when diplomatic relations were restored following the Turkish attack on Negroponte. It is likely that Costanzo remained at the court until the Sultan's death in 1481, when this medal was produced. The reverse shows the subject on horseack. The work is a fine old aftercast of the 1481 version of Costanzo's original medal of 1477- 80; it was possibly cast after a reworked and polished lead original. Numismatics.Souvenir with portrait of a man ca. 1780-90 Miniature by French Painter French In eighteenth-century Europe, Paris led the production of high-quality luxury goods. Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuffboxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace. Gold snuffboxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuffbox, too, had become an important social prop. Snuffboxes were considered highly fashPortrait of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, later King of the French, 1804. Richard Cosway (British, 1742-1821).
