Gaochang (Qara-hoja in Uyghur) is located in present-day Xinjiang Province, 30 km from Turpan. The site is also known in early published reports as Chotscho, Khocho, or Qočo. The archaeological remains are just outside the town at a place originally called Idykut-schari or Idikutschari by local residents. Artistic monuments of the city have been published by Albert von Le Coq. Gaochang was built in the 1st century BCE, it was an important site along the Silk Road. It played a key role as a transportation hub in western China. There is some documented history surviving today, perhaps stories passed on through oral tradition exist to detail the history. It was burnt down in wars in the 14th century. Old palace ruins and inside and outside cities can still be seen today.

Buddhist Guardian King China The elaborately dressed figure with a flaming halo holding a bow and arrow is one of the Buddhist guardian kings of the four cardinal directions. (The arrow suggests he may be associated with the east, despite the inscription on the mounting, which identifies him as the guardian of the west.)The face and hands as well as several segments of the costume, including parts of the body armor and helmet and the swirling ribbons to the figure's left and right, are made from applied textiles with embroidered details. The features of his broad face, which is mustached and lightly bearded, include a prominent nose and fierce, watchful eyes-characteristics often found in East Asian guardian figures.. The blue background of these twelve portraits of Inca kings could have been produced with a variety of pigments that were available in the Viceroyalty of Peru in the eighteenth century: Prussian blue, from Germany; indigo, from the Americas; and smalt, imported from Europe. In the Viceroyalty of Peru, the choice of a blue back-ground for these portraits was strategic, elevating the subjects as blue did in European paintings of rulers and nobles. Following the European tradition, Cuzcos surviving Inca aristocracy likely commissioned these portraits to document their royal heritage and thus legitimize their political and social authority.
