The Annunciation ca. 1510-20 Nardon Pénicaud French Pénicauds name and the date 1503, once (but no longer) visible on an enameled Crucifixion in the Musée National du Moyen Age, Paris, have served to document the enamelers style. The figure of the archangel Gabriel on the left plaque was probably based on an engraving by Martin Schongauer (ca. 1430-1491), but the facial style and gravity of expression are Pénicauds.. Paten cover 16th century Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.. Paten cover. Pair of Stained Glass Panels with Male and Female Donor, c. 1480. France, 15th century. Pot metal, white glass with silver stain; overall: 156 x 43.5 x 1.5 cm (61 7/16 x 17 1/8 x 9/16 in.). The origin of these stained glass panels is unknown. They depict a male and female donor, presumably husband and wife, who gaze upon a now-lost central panel. The object of their devotions was likely a crucified Christ or a standing figure of the Virgin Mary. The man, dressed in armor, and the woman, wearing a bejeweled and richly embroidered gown, are accompanied by their not yet identified coats-of-arms. They are undoubtedly members of an aristocratic elite who commissioned these windows, perhaps for a family chapel.

Fragment of a Border ca. 1185-1205 French This fragment was originally part of the border of a stained-glass window, most likely from the clerestory of a church. It is composed of two different motifs-a palmette and a circle enclosing a rosette, a not uncommon combination in the 12th century, but increasingly rare in the 13th. The variety of color in this border, its lush vegetal forms, and the detail of painting relate it to stained-glass ornament produced around the end of the 12th century.. Fragment of a Border.
