One of the most important roles of the immune system is to cleanse the body of viruses and cancer cells. This work is done by killer T cells that track down and destroy tumors and virus-infected cells. In this immunofluorescence image, a killer T cell (blue) engages a target cell. A patch of signaling molecules (pink) that congregate at the site of cell-cell contact indicates that the CTL has identified a target. Lytic granules (red) that contain cytotoxic components then travel along the microtubule cytoskeleton (green) to the site of contact and are secreted, thereby killing the target.

This fluorescent acid-fast stained (Smithwick) photomicrograph revealed the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria in a sputum smear. M. tuberculosis is an acid-fast bacterium (AFB), and is therefore, undetectable when stained using a Gram-stain technique. However, using the Smithwick method, which employs acridine orange as the specific stain, the M. tuberculosis bacteria glow yellow under ultraviolet light microscopy.

Cells in an injured mouse eye can be coaxed into regenerating into neurons, and these new neurons appear to integrate into the eye's circuitry, according to new research. The findings potentially open the door to new treatments for eye trauma and retinal disease.

According to a new study in mice by scientists at the National Eye Institute (NEI), immune cells called microglia can completely repopulate in the retina after being nearly eliminated. Cells also exhibit their normal organization and functioning. Findings point to potential therapies to control inflammation and slow the progression of rare retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in Americans 50 years and over.

As tumors grow, they possess surrounding blood vessels and their ability to supply enough oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia. Instead of killing the tumor, however, hypoxia triggers changes in cancer cell rebound that actually affect tumor growth and spread. Better understanding hypoxia in cancer cells could help researchers find the best ways to manage the disease. This image of a mouse model for HER2-positive breast cancer uses a new imaging technique called transparent tumor tomography that visualizes the tumor microenvironment in three dimensions at single cell resolution. Hypoxic areas are in green, HER2 proteins in blue, CD31 endothelial cells in red.

Biomedical research offers hope for a variety of medical problems, from diabetes to the replacement of damaged bone and tissues. Bioreactors, which are used to grow cells and tissue cultures, play a major role in such research and production efforts. Cell culturing, such as this bone cell culture, is an important part of biomedical research. The BioDyn payload includes a tissue engineering investigation. The commercial affiliate, Millenium Biologix, Inc. has been conducting bone implant experiments to better understand how synthetic bone can be used to treat bone-related illnesses and bone damaged in accidents. On STS-95, the BioDyn payload will include a bone cell culture aimed to help develop this commercial synthetic bone product. Millenium Biologix, Inc. is exploring the potential for making human bone implantable materials by seeding its proprietary artificial scaffold material with human bone cells. Zoom in on the flare in ultraviolet (SDO/AIA), X-rays (Hinode) and gamma-rays (RHESSI) --On March 29, 2014 the sun released an X-class flare. It was observed by NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS; NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO; NASA's Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, or RHESSI; the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's Hinode; and the National Solar Observatory's Dunn Solar Telescope located at Sacramento Peak in New Mexico.To have a record of such an intense flare from so many observatories is unprecedented. Such research can help scientists better understand what catalyst sets off these large explosions on the sun. Perhaps we may even some day be able to predict their onset and forewarn of the radio blackouts solar flares can cause near Earth - blackouts that can interfere with airplane, ship and military communications. This image is a color composite of the supernova remnant E0102-72 x-ray (blue), optical (green), and radio (red). E0102-72 is the remnant of a star that exploded in a nearby galaxy known as the Small Magellanic Cloud. The star exploded outward at speeds in excess of 20 million kilometers per hour (12 million mph) and collided with surrounding gas. This collision produced two shock waves, or cosmic sonic booms, one traveling outward, and the other rebounding back into the material ejected by the explosion. The radio image, shown in red, was made using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The radio waves are due to extremely high-energy electrons spiraling around magnetic field lines in the gas and trace the outward moving shock wave. The Chandra X-ray Observatory image, shown in blue, shows gas that has been heated to millions of degrees by the rebounding, or reverse shock wave.
