He was then appointed chief of Staff to the Allied Supreme Commander, South-East Asia, and in July of this year was appointed Military Secretary to the Secretary of state for war. A keen sportsman, Gen. Browning won the English High Hurdles three times between 1924 and 1926 and was for five years a member of the English International bobsleigh crew. September 18, 1946.

General Giraud Pledges French Aid To U.S. In War On Japan -- General Henri Honore Giraud, Commander-in-Chief of French forces in North and West Africa and co-chairman of the French Committee of National Liberation, said at a press conference in Washington, where this picture was taken, that France will march side by side with the United States in the war against Japan. He added that France would remain by the side of the United States to "build a peace that will be lasting and just, but also realistic." Ivan Stepanovich Konev (1897 21 May 1973), Soviet military commander, who led Red Army forces on the Eastern Front during World War II, retook much of Eastern Europe from occupation by the Axis Powers, and helped in the capture of Germany's capital, Berlin. In 1956, as the Commander of Warsaw Pact forces, Konev led the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution by Soviet armoured divisions.

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (18 December 1878 - 5 March 1953) was the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953. While formally the office of the General Secretary was elective and was not initially regarded as top position in the Soviet state, after Vladimir Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin managed to consolidate more and more power in his hands, gradually putting down all opposition groups within the party. Stalin's idea of socialism in one country became the primary line of the Soviet politics. He dominated Soviet politics and the USSR through the Great Purges of the 1930s, then the catastrophic Second World War, remaining in power until his death in 1953.
